H.S. Cross Country: Ally Rome reaches new heights for District 2 Class 2A title

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; It does not take much to be healthy, Sean Vitale a physical therapy student at Misericordia University said at the Volunteers in Medicine&#8217;s Halloween Hustle &amp; Health Fair Saturday.</p><p>&#8220;You need 30 minutes of activity a day,&#8221; Vitale of West Pittston said.</p><p>Vitale&#8217;s information was just one of many available to participants during the Halloween Hustle &amp; Health Fair held from 10 a.m. to noon on North Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilkes-Barre Saturday. Wilkes-Barre City shut down a section of North Pennsylvania Avenue from North Street to East Jackson Street for the health-related street fair.</p><p>The Halloween Hustle &amp; Health Fair was designed to familiarize the community with the services available through Volunteers in Medicine and to raise sponsorship funds to maintain programs, Kelly Ranieli, executive director of Volunteers in Medicine in Wilkes-Barre said.</p><p>Volunteers in Medicine, located at 190 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Wilkes-Barre is a nonprofit organization providing medical and dental healthcare services to the working, low-income families of the Wyoming Valley, Ranieli said.</p><p>The clinic provides medical services as well as chiropractic care, gynecologists, family planning, dietitians and a full-time dental service.</p><p>&#8220;We can have 100 to 150 patients a week,&#8221; Renieli said.</p><p>Over 100 people came out to take advantage of free blood pressure checks, flu shots and take a chance at winning one of 37 raffle prizes.</p><p>Vitale led a warm-up session and then led the crowd around a loop from North Street to East Jackson Street, five times.</p><p>Physician Assistant Programs from Misericordia University in Dallas and King&#8217;s College in Wilkes-Barre had health-related materials available for participants to take. Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke had a table highlighting the importance of regular dental care. Wilkes University, Commonwealth Health and McCann School of Business &amp; Technology also had informational booths available.</p><p>Tux, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins&#8217; mascot danced with children, adding to the festive atmosphere.</p><p>Wilkes-Barre resident Gladys Guzman has been a patient at Volunteers in Medicine for the past five years.</p><p>&#8220;They help me control my diabetes,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I come here for mammograms, dental and x-rays. I love this program.&#8221;</p><p>The program requires patients to have a job and meet specific income requirements to be eligible for services, Guzman said.</p><p>&#8220;I think you have to earn less than $22,000 to be accepted into the program,&#8221; she said.</p><style>
