High school volleyball: Wyoming Area downs Crestwood to advance to district semifinals

Wyoming Seminary reaches District 2 Class A final for 2nd straight year

<p>DUNMORE - Sarah Warner couldn&#8217;t ask for any more.</p><p>Her Berwick Bulldogs fought, scrapped and battled with No. 1 seed Dunmore. The Bucks just had too much pop on the serve.</p><p>Abby Bessoir and Samantha Domzalski combined for 15 aces, and senior Isabelle Cooper had 19 kills in a three-set victory over the Bulldogs in a District 2 Class 2A quarterfinal match at Dunmore High School.</p><p>Set scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-20.</p><p>&#8220;I told our seniors that this wasn&#8217;t even an inkling of their imagination at the beginning of the season,&#8221; Warner, Berwick&#8217;s head coach, said. &#8220;To get here was an unbelievable accomplishment for them. They are definitely paving the way for the girls that have the opportunities for years to come.&#8221;</p><p>It was a series of long runs for the Lady Bucks that did Berwick in.</p><p>A 9-1 spurt to broke open the first set, one where the Bulldogs trailed by just two, 9-7, early.</p><p>Bessoir recorded four straight aces to start the second as Dunmore jumped out to a 10-1 lead.</p><p>It was similar in the third, but just a different server. This time, a large run by Domzalski gave the Lady Bucks a 12-3 lead.</p><p>&#8220;The girls fought. I told them to be proud of our program and always fight,&#8221; Warner said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why they were in this tournament to begin with. We fought all season. Serving and passing are the biggest keys to this game, and we were definitely not prepared for the jump-serve. The ceiling was low here, and we weren&#8217;t making the right adjustments.&#8221;</p><p>Maddie Traugh led Berwick with six kills and 11 digs, while Sydney Reigel added 4 kills.</p><p><strong>MMI Prep 3, Elk Lake 0</strong></p><p>MMI Prep swept Elk Lake by the game scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-15 to advance to the District 2 Class A final for the first time since 2009.</p><p>Dana Caratto (11 kills, 7 service points, 3 digs, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 ace), Madison Perchak (4 kills, 3 assists, 3 digs, 2 service points, 2 aces), Desiree Dinko (10 service points, 6 kills, 5 aces, 3 assists, 2 digs), Lauryn Banyas (16 assists, 8 service points, 2 digs, 1 ace), Shae Heft (2 digs), Gabbbey Kupsho (10 service points, 3 aces) and Stephanie Zellner (3 kills, 2 digs) all helped lead MMI Prep to the win.</p><p><strong>Holy Redeemer 3, Nanticoke 0</strong></p><p>Lauren Slavoski had 17 service points, 14 kills, two digs and an ace, Courtney Kijek tallied 21 assists, five kills and four blocks and Kassie Schinski contributed 16 service points and two digs as Holy Redeemer swept Nanticoke in three sets. Caroline Banas added five kills and a dig and Ashley Andrejko added 12 service points, an ace and a dig to also help the Royals.</p><p>Game scores were 25-15, 25-5 and 25-5.</p><p><strong>Wyoming Valley West 3, Pittston Area 2</strong></p><p>Wyoming Valley West edged Pittston Area by the game scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-19, 20-25 and 15-13 to advance to the District 2 Class 3A Final.</p><p>Grace Giza (24 kills, 7 blocks, 4 aces), Audi Welles (22 service points, 7 kills, 4 aces), Kiersten Wiedwald (35 assists, 7 service points), Samantha Owens (4 kills, 1 block) and Madison Michak (13 service points, 4 kills) led the way for the Spartans.</p><p>Marley O&#8217;Brien tallied 15 digs, 11 kills, eight service points, five aces and two blocks, Kirsten Durling had 15 assists, 11 kills and nine digs and Emily O&#8217;Brien added 20 service points and three aces for Pittston Area.</p><p><strong>North Pocono 3, Abington Heights 0</strong></p><p>Katie McNulty recorded 14 service points, eight assists and four aces, Heather Kramer had 12 service points and three blocks and Katlyn Ivanoff tallied nine kills, five digs, three blocks and three aces as North Pocono topped Abington Heights. Also finding the score sheet for the Trojans were Alea Troup (6 digs), Cierra Fantine (6 kills) and Amy Domanish (10 assists).</p><p>Game scores were 25-8, 25-9 and 25-23.</p><style>
