<p class="x_MsoNormal">KINGSTON &#8212; Fifteen rounds.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Fifteen rounds of penalty kicks. One-hundred-ten minutes. That&#8217;s what was needed to decide the District 2 Class 2A girls soccer championship.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Coughlin won the crown 2-2 (12-11 PKs) over Scranton Prep Wednesday at Nesbitt Stadium. It was the Crusaders&#8217; first title since the spring 2004 season. Coughlin&#8217;s victory ends a four-game losing streak for the program in the district final dating back to 2005.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The Crusaders advance to the PIAA state playoffs Tuesday where they will face the District 4 winner. The Classics earn an automatic berth for the sixth straight season and will travel to the District 3 champion.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Following the celebration, senior Mary Tona circled around three teammates, grabbed their shoulders and put it better than any sports journalist.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">&#8220;Are you kidding me?&#8221; she said. &#8220;Are you kidding me? Look at that score! Are you kidding me?&#8221;</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The winning PK came from the leg of Hailee Dumont.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Dumont hit the crossbar on her first PK. She shelved her second in Round 15. Her counterpart Eileen Casey&#8217;s shot went wide left, sending the Crusaders into a frenzy.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">&#8220;I just dropped to my knees and screamed,&#8221; Dumont said. &#8220;I&#8217;m feeling so many emotions, and I can&#8217;t describe any of them.&#8221;</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The nail-biting finish seemed more implausible when the first 17 minutes are factored in. Scranton Prep came out of the gates looking like it was playing on another level than the Crusaders.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Cara Griffith scored two goals within a four-minute span to put Coughlin into a two-goal deficit early. She took a scrum into the net for her first. Griffith looked like she was toying around with the Crusaders defense as she weaved in and out for her second score. The Classics had seven shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">They only had two more for the next 90 minutes.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Coughlin&#8217;s defense stepped up, and Tona turned the Crusaders&#8217; fortunes with a spectacular goal in the 20th. Tona lined a shot from 27 yards out via a Caroline Majeski dish, leaving Prep keeper A.J. Hendershot without a chance for a save.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">&#8220;That&#8217;s leadership. She steps up in big moments,&#8221; Coughlin coach Joe Spagnuolo Jr. said. &#8220;The defense was stellar to give up two goals in the first (17) minutes. That&#8217;s a good goalkeeper. We didn&#8217;t give them many chances.&#8221;</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Coughlin nibbled at the Prep defense for the next 58 minutes to no avail. Hailee Dumont skied a ball that was tipped by Hendershot in the 25th. Le&#8217;Jeune Barry stole a ball for a breakaway in the final seconds of the first half but couldn&#8217;t finish. Kendall Pearage continually put good crosses up with no results.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">&#8220;It took us 15 minutes to get our legs,&#8221; Spagnuolo said. &#8220;We had to weather the storm. Once we did that, we flipped the switch and changed our chances.&#8221;</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Skyler Panattieri was the Crusaders&#8217; saving grace with a little more than two minutes left. Tona drove on the left side and shot to the far side, but Hendershot made a one-handed snag at it. Panattieri raced over to pounce on the ball and put it in net.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Things almost went awry for the Crusaders in the 100th minute. Eileen Casey nailed a 20 yard shot that was misplayed. But Coughlin goalkeeper Paige Davis rushed to thwart it inches in front of the goal line.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">In the PKs, Scranton Prep had two prime chances. Barry hit the post in the eighth round, but Davis saved left on Madison Ziobro.
