This is in response to the <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/local/488951/councilman-veto-could-interfere-with-pringle-police-protection" target="_blank">Oct. 14 news article </a>about my veto of the borough&#8217;s police contract with Kingston.I did this veto because I knew it was not being done properly. When there is a change in a contract, just like the two previous contracts, the borough must adopt an ordinance, like the two previous ordinances. The police committee should have known this new ordinance had to be passed, instead of rushing me to sign a contract that our secretary typed up &#8211; that I know should have been drawn up by Kingston, like the two previous contracts were.I think this matter could have been resolved at the Oct. 15 meeting of Pringle Council, where we could have talked this out.I did this to prevent any legal issues. Never was police protection an issue. It was about the legality of any action if the contract wasn&#8217;t done properly.Currently, Pringle has police protection until Dec. 31, 2015. I know Kingston&#8217;s council and solicitor will handle the new contract correctly, as they did in the past.Now that Pringle Borough advertised the new ordinance to be attached to the new police contract, the police protection will continue. Never were the residents of Pringle in harm&#8217;s way, as some members of council have stated to both the Times Leader and to some residents.I believe the article was done in retaliation because I was running for council &#8211; I felt we needed a change &#8211; and because I was the deciding factor when it came to the purchase of the new garbage packer. Councilmen Joseph Piazza and Christopher Williams wanted to outsource the garbage, and that could have been a cost of $3 and upward for each bag. Dorothy PetersMayorPringle
