WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Wilkes arrived at the 20th annual Mayor&#8217;s Cup Game seeking the recipe for an upset.King&#8217;s cooperated by providing many of the ingredients.Isaiah Robinson blocked a punt 1:28 into the game and the Monarchs lost five turnovers while committing 121 yards in penalties Saturday afternoon as the visiting Colonels broke a seven-game losing streak with a 24-17 victory at McCarthy Stadium.&#8220;We had some emotion and momentum early on off of those things and that really helped us,&#8221; second-year Wilkes coach Trey Brown said.Jared Powell, Wilkes&#8217; Most Valuable Player in the game, combined efforts with Mike Paskas and Robinson to help coerce King&#8217;s into even more blunders on a mistake-filled day.Powell returned a fumble 48 yards for a first-quarter touchdown and came up with an interception during a scoreless fourth quarter.&#8220;We heard that their defense was pretty tough so we needed to make it easier for our offense,&#8221; Powell said. &#8220;We wanted to get a touchdown, but also just get a lot of turnovers and play the field position game.&#8221;Robinson blocked a punt and had one of three Wilkes first-quarter fumble recoveries.The blocked punt and two lost fumbles gave Wilkes a 17-0 lead just 6:17 into the game when Powell ran in the fumble.&#8220;We were in man-to-man all across the board and I was free,&#8221; said Powell, one of only two seniors among the top eight players in the Wilkes secondary. &#8220;Ondre Roberts made a good play, the ball came out, I just picked it up and the next thing I&#8217;m in the end zone.&#8221;The Colonels used the win to escape the Mid Atlantic Conference cellar and finish 2-7 in the MAC and 2-8 overall. King&#8217;s, which had won the previous two Mayor&#8217;s Cup Games, finished 3-6 and 3-7.Wilkes fittingly was able to go into victory formation for two kneel downs in the final minute as the result of a penalty on King&#8217;s. The sixth personal foul of the day on the Monarchs ended the last hope, turning what would have been a fourth-and-four situation into a game-clinching first down.The Colonels also took the lead with the help of a penalty.The teams combined for one yard and two punts after six plays on the game&#8217;s first two possessions.King&#8217;s got away its punt, but was forced to kick again because of a holding penalty.Robinson made the most of the second chance, slipping past one blocker at the line, beating another in the backfield and blocking the punt to give the Colonels possession at the Monarchs 12.&#8220;They kicked somebody else out and they didn&#8217;t account for me,&#8221; Robinson said.Wilkes again could not move but Carl Von Glahn kicked a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 12:08 still remaining in the first quarter.Three plays later, a Paskas sack forced a fumble that Tanner Stengel recovered at the King&#8217;s 44.Brandon Latierno broke a 37-yard touchdown run up the middle for a 10-0 lead with 9:10 left in the quarter.Roberts and Powell combined to give Wilkes another touchdown 27 seconds later.The 17-0 lead held up for more than 15 minutes.King&#8217;s started fighting back with a 14-play, 92-yard drive.The Monarchs converted a pair of fourth downs along the way, including a 26-yard run by Ryan Singley on a fake punt on fourth-and-five from their 25. Tom Hehre connected with Mike Palmer for 27 yards on fourth-and-seven then 9 yards on the touchdown to cut the Wilkes lead to 17-7 at halftime.Wilkes, which had settled for a field goal from the 12 early in the game, was unable to convert from the 24 late in the half after a Paskas interception.Paskas finished with two sacks, the interception and forced fumble.The offense that failed to make the most of opportunities in the first half, helped protect the lead throughout the second half.After being at a statistical disadvantage while building the lead in the first 30 minutes, Wilkes moved the ball and had advantages of 14-6 in first downs, 161-152 in total offense and 17:46-12:14 in time of possession.&#8220;They&#8217;re a really good defense,&#8221; Brown said. &#8220;We were out of sorts at times offensively.&#8220;I&#8217;m proud that we came back at the end and pieced together some long drives by kind of pounding the ball.
