Recipe for success

<p>BLOOMSBURG &#8212; Once Meredith Sholder started scoring, she didn&#8217;t stop.</p><p>At least, not until the hot-shooting junior etched her name into Emmaus High School field hockey lore.</p><p>Sholder cut through Coughlin&#8217;s scrambling defense Saturday to score the Green Hornets&#8217; first four goals while tying a school record, ending the Crusaders&#8217; playoff run with a 5-1 victory in the PIAA Class 3A field hockey quarterfinals at Central Columbia High School.</p><p>&#8220;Once we scored, we were able to take a deep breath,&#8221; Sholder said.</p><p>By the time she finished burying the ball in the cage, Emmaus was breathing easy with a commanding 4-1 lead with 10 minutes to play. And Sholder had matched the all-time Emmaus record of 168 goals, shared by Allison Evans - at least for a few days.</p><p>The Green Hornets will face Penn Manor, a 5-3 winner over Unionville, in Tuesday&#8217;s semifinals - where Sholder will try to break the Emmaus career record for goals and increase her 63 goals on the season while continuing her pursuit of national leader Bree Bednarski - who finished this season with 67 goals.</p><p>&#8220;Someone&#8217;s always chasing history,&#8221; said Emmaus coach Sue Butz, the national leader with 862 career coaching victories. &#8220;There are a lot of great scorers in Pennsylvania right now. There are a lot of great field hockey players. They&#8217;re all competing for top dog.&#8221;</p><p>Sholder was content to make sure the Green Hornets came out on top in the state quarterfinals.</p><p>She scored off an assist from Maddy Dorn just over seven minutes into the game, then gave Emmaus a 2-0 lead with a goal off a feed from freshman Madison Orobono.</p><p>&#8220;She is a very strong player,&#8221; Coughlin coach Colleen Wood said of Sholder. &#8220;The defense did stop a lot of shots. You could see where we have kids that aren&#8217;t experienced. When it comes to games like this, you need every spot to be solid.&#8221;</p><p>Kyra Wozniak gave Coughlin a solid chance, answering Sholder&#8217;s second score with a backhanded-chip that bounded into the goal just 34 seconds before halftime to cut the Emmaus lead to 2-1 at intermission.</p><p>&#8220;We definitely had a shot,&#8221; Wood said. &#8220;We just had a couple breakdowns.&#8221;</p><p>Sholder&#8217;s third goal was a backbreaker, as she whistled the ball into the cage in the 12th minute of the second half to give the Green Hornets another two-goal cushion.</p><p>&#8220;I think we did a better job, as a team, of getting the ball up on the offensive side,&#8221; Sholder said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been working on that. We were able to find the spots and play it tougher. Once we scored the second goal, it gave us confidence. Maybe too much, because they came right back and scored.&#8221;</p><p>But 25-0 Emmaus, which has allowed more than one goal in a game this season just once, didn&#8217;t allow any more scores.</p><p>And Sholder closed out her vicious attack on the cage by adding a sizzling backhand for her fourth score with 10:45 to play, followed by a put-away shot from senior Carly Philbin to end the scoring with 7:34 remaining and send Emmaus into the state semifinal round - where the team&#8217;s season ended last year.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s a great scorer,&#8221; Butz said of Sholder. &#8220;She&#8217;s just one of those beautiful players. She&#8217;s got it for field hockey. It&#8217;s a good feeling, we at least got to the point we were last year. Hopefully, we&#8217;ll have better success.&#8221;</p><p>Coughlin&#8217;s season of wild success came to an end, as the Crusaders finished 20-2 overall and went unbeaten through 16 regular season and District 2 games while winning the District 2 Class 3A title and advancing to the PIAA quarterfinals for the third time in four seasons.</p><p>&#8220;It was a great bunch of seniors,&#8221; Wood said. &#8220;No matter what happened, they were good leaders this year. It&#8217;s a good group, they do well together.
