Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins name Jay Leach interim head coach

<p>Wyoming Valley Conference football likely will have its second coaching vacancy as Holy Redeemer&#8217;s Scott Dennis is expected to accept the same position at Central Columbia.</p><p>According to sources, Dennis will be appointed Central Columbia&#8217;s coach later this week.</p><p>Redeemer athletic director J.P. Aquilina declined to comment, but said Dennis hadn&#8217;t submitted a letter of resignation. Dennis couldn&#8217;t be reached for comment.</p><p>Dennis coached Redeemer for two seasons, compiling a 4-16 record as he tried to build a program which has struggled since its inception in 2007. Dennis came to Redeemer from Berwick where he was a highly successful freshmen head coach for five years and an assistant for six under George Curry and Gary Campbell Jr.</p><p>Berwick is scheduled to name a new football coach Wednesday night to replace Curry. Interviews will take place Monday and Tuesday, although sources have said former Wilkes University coach Frank Sheptock is a runaway favorite to get the position. Sheptock is Berwick&#8217;s athletic director.</p><p>The Central Columbia job opened shortly after the season when coach Jason Hippenstiel resigned after seven years. The Blue Jays finished 1-9 this season and were 20-52 during Hippenstiel&#8217;s reign.</p><p>Central Columbia, which is just south of Berwick, was once a District 4 power. The Blue Jays won 10 or more games four times during the 1990s. But the program began to slip in 2002 with a 4-6 record and has posted just two winning seasons in the last 14 years. Twice it finished winless, in 2005 and 2010.</p><p>Redeemer will once again be searching for a new coach. Since the school was formed by the Catholic school mergers, it has had five head coaches. Len Butczynski is the only one to stay more than two seasons, running the program from 2007-2009.</p><p>Redeemer has never won more than three games in a season and its overall record for nine seasons is 16-73.</p><style>
