SCRANTON &#8212; The board of directors of Moses Taylor Foundation has approved its inaugural grant recipients, awarding a total of $1,137,880.57 to 13 organizations that advance the foundation&#8217;s strategic priority of promoting health and wellness throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.&#8220;Moses Taylor Hospital was founded by Moses Taylor in 1892 to provide quality healthcare to the residents of our community,&#8221; said LaTida Smith, Moses Taylor Foundation President and CEO. &#8220;Today, Moses Taylor Foundation is taking the next step on this continuing journey. Our inaugural grants honor the philanthropic legacy of Moses Taylor by providing meaningful opportunities for Northeast Pennsylvania residents &#8211; especially the most vulnerable &#8211; to lead healthier lives.&#8221;The foundation will administer quarterly grant cycles. The full list of inaugural grants is noted below.Friends of the Poor: $5,000 to support the organization&#8217;s annual community Thanksgiving meal event in Scranton.Make-A-Wish&#174; Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia: $5,000 to support the wish of one Scranton-area child. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.Newport Township Police Department: $10,110.57 for the purchase of life-saving automated external defibrillator (AED) devices and first-aid kits.The Institute for Public Policy &amp; Economic Development: $12,500 to support the 2016 Regional Indicators program. The program features the facilitation / convening / support of seven task forces encompassing jobs, economy and economic development; health and healthcare; housing; education and workforce development; energy; public safety and planning, land use transportation and infrastructure.Wyoming County United Way: $20,000 to support the Children&#8217;s Produce Market, a food distribution program which provides free produce and other nutritious food items for needy families with children.American Red Cross Northeast PA Chapter: $19,920 to support the Home Fire Campaign, an initiative that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent in five years by partnering with the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Fire Departments to install free smoke alarms.Children&#8217;s Service Center (CSC) : $200,000 for use in constructing the Children&#8217;s Service Center&#8217;s 18,000 square-foot comprehensive outpatient clinic in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The clinic is designed to serve an increasing number of children, adolescents and families who will benefit from an on-site medical home with mental, behavioral and physical health services.Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO): $350,000 to build capacity for CEO&#8217;s Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. Specifically, grant funds will be used to support the capital and operating budgets of the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Center for Healthy Living and implementation of its food distribution programs that focus on healthy foods and fresh fruits and vegetables.Lackawanna College: $50,000 to create and implement an Occupational Therapist Associate (OTA) degree program. The program will be launched in response to national, state and local demands for OTAs.NEPA Community Health Care: $140,350 to support expansion of the new Community Health Center in Montrose, Susquehanna County is one of the poorest counties in Pennsylvania, with the greatest disparities evident among women and children.Scranton Primary Health Care Center (SPHCC): $200,000 for expansion of SPHCC&#8217;s dental services. Grant funds will be used to hire a general dentist with sedation credentials in order to increase capacity and better serve the homeless, uninsured, under-insured and generally under-served residents of greater Lackawanna County.United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties: $50,000 to support the Gift of Warmth Program, which focuses on emergency heating needs for low-income and senior populations. Grant funds can be used for three purposes: to fund emergency purchases of fossil fuels such as oil and coal, to avoid utility service terminations and to fund furnace repairs.Volunteers in Medicine (VIM): $75,000 to support the organization&#8217;s Access to Care initiative, which provides medical and dental care and other vital programs to low-income residents of Luzerne County.&#8220;Since our founding in 2012, our board and staff have worked tirelessly in order to arrive at this day of inaugural giving. These inaugural grants represent the culmination of more than three years of planning and preparation &#8211; they mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for us, and for residents of Northeast Pennsylvania,&#8221; said Douglas G.
