Top seeds make it through Day 1 of WVC Wrestling Tournament; Tunkhannock leads Hazleton Area in team race

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Ryan Gilgallon&#8217;s steal to end the game Friday night was meaningless. He and his Meyers teammates had already locked up a 46-36 victory over Holy Redeemer.But at the same time, it was fitting because the 6-foot-4 junior seemed to have his hands on the ball all game.Gilgallon grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, including one that stemmed Redeemer&#8217;s fourth-quarter rally as Meyers improved to 2-0 in Division 3 and 4-5 overall.&#8220;Waz is gone now so somebody had to step up,&#8221; Gilgallon said.Ryan Wasley &#8212; aka Waz &#8212; is Meyers&#8217; biggest player at 6-foot-6 and considered one of the better inside players in Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball. But he is out indefinitely with mononucleosis, taking away the team&#8217;s main cog in the paint.Enter Gilgallon, who grabbed eight more rebounds after rolling his left ankle at 2:31 of the second quarter.&#8220;I just tweaked it a little,&#8221; Gillgallon said.Perhaps no rebounds were bigger than the two with Meyers ahead 34-30 with under three minutes to play. Gilgallon&#8217;s 13th board came on the defensive end and led to a free throw by Omar Kelly. Then when Kelly missed his second free throw, Gilgallon plucked the ball and teammate Juwane Buckner drove the lane for a 37-30 lead.&#8220;I thought the difference in the game tonight was Ryan Gilgallon,&#8221; Meyers coach Pat Toole said. &#8220;Ryan Gilgallon on a bad ankle really gutted it out. Just a tough effort. This kid is a guard playing out of position and he&#8217;s playing great for us.&#8221;Somebody had to because the game featured two bland offensive performances. Meyers shot 12 of 38 from the field. Redeemer (0-2 Div. 3, 3-6) was slightly worst at 11 of 37.&#8220;Our inability to run things offensively is inexcusable and that falls on me,&#8221; Toole said. &#8220;I&#8217;m not getting what I need to get out of my guys offensively.&#8221;Redeemer coach Paul Guido had a similar assessment of his offense, which failed to reach 40 points for a sixth time. Eleven turnovers didn&#8217;t help, either.&#8220;Our offense is really hurting,&#8221; Guido said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not necessarily our execution. I think it&#8217;s simply putting the ball in the hole. We&#8217;re struggling putting the ball in the hole &#8212; inside, in the lane, a free throw, an open perimeter shot. I think we&#8217;re getting good shots. We&#8217;re just having a hard time converting it.&#8221;Redeemer was able to get the ball inside to 6-8 John Carr at times in the first half, but Carr was held without a shot in the third quarter as Meyers took a 30-20 lead into the fourth.The Royals, though, scored the fourth quarter&#8217;s initial eight points to move within 30-28. The final four points came on consecutive free throws by Zach Brennan &#8212; two of the normal variety and two via technical free throw. But with a chance to tie, Redeemer had yet another turnover.Meyers essentially wrapped things up with 1:13 remaining as Buckner turned a steal into a layup and a foul shot for a 42-32 lead.Redeemer was in the same situation last season, trailing Meyers by two games in the standings after two games before rallying to win the Division 3 championship. The Royals won&#8217;t have much time to dwell on the loss as they head to New York City on Saturday morning to play Hunter College High School.Nanticoke 47, Wyoming Area 30Justin Casey had a team-leading 15 points while Brent Piontkowski added 10 points to help push Nanticoke past Wyoming Area. The Trojans led 24-20 at halftime.Wyoming Area was led by P.J. Angeli, who tallied nine points.GAR 51, Wyoming Seminary 41Keyshawn Palmer put up 23 points while going 9 for 10 on free throws, as the Grenadiers defeated Wyoming Seminary on the road.
