H.S. boys basketball: Ryan Gilgallon comes up big as Meyers tops Holy Redeemer

BERWICK &#8212; The game was quickly getting away.And just like that, Maddie Kelley and the rest of the determined Dallas Mountaineers pulled it right back.Kelley scored 10 of her team-high 13 points in the second half Friday as Dallas rallied to remain unbeaten after the first week of Wyoming Valley Conference play with a spirited 49-42 victory over Berwick at the Berwick Middle School.&#8220;We don&#8217;t give up,&#8221; Kelley said.Because they didn&#8217;t, the Mountaineers moved to the top of the WVC Division 1 at 3-0 with a third consecutive league victory that went down to the wire.&#8220;It feels awesome, definitely,&#8221; Kelley said. &#8220;We couldn&#8217;t do it without our hard work in practice and in the offseason. Teamwork, definitely. Nobody was selfish. We were struggling in the first half. We talked in the locker room about what was going wrong and fixed it in the second half.&#8221;Dallas needed all the camaraderie and adjustments it could get to overcome a much bigger Berwick team.The Mountaineers started the game strong enough, using 3-point field goals by Kelley, Sara Lojewski and Courtney Hoats to build a 15-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.But when that outside shooting cooled down some, the Bulldogs began to take control.Led by 6-foot Taylor Montana, who scored nine of her team-high 13 points over the first two quarters, Berwick forged a 24-19 advantage by halftime.And that swelled to 10 points when her sister, Payden Montana, drove the lane for a layup midway through the third quarter.In an instant, though, Dallas darted right back in the game. The Mountaineers rolled off the next six points &#8212; four by Kelley &#8212; and eventually pulled within 32-31 with a quarter to play.&#8220;I just have a lot of pride in my players,&#8221; Dallas coach Kelly Johnson said. &#8220;They&#8217;re hard to break. They don&#8217;t give up.&#8221;Then, the Mountaineers&#8217; teamwork really took off.Lojewski took over in the end, swishing her second trey to give Dallas a 35-34 lead, then dropping a pair of foul shots to move the Mountaineers&#8217; lead to four points.But Kendra Saba&#8217;s clutch 3-pointer put Dallas ahead to stay, 38-36 with 5:29 remaining. And Courtney Hoats hit five of her 10 points to help the Mountaineers get close in the third quarter.
