Penguins tough guy Sestito ready for opportunity on the power play

Vito Pasone opened the second half of the season in fine style with the Appalachian State wrestling team.The Meyers grad posted a 3-2 record at 125 pounds in the tough Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in the Mountaineers first home dual match, posted a pin in 44 seconds to spark the team to a 33-8 triumph over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Jan. 10. He&#8217;s 13-8 this season and has a career mark of 71-40.&#8220;Vito is doing a great job,&#8221; coach Johnmark Bentley said. &#8220;He has been more consistent with his performance this season which is a huge improvement over a year ago.&#8221;Pasone was 17-11 wrestling at 131 pounds last season.&#8220;I think Vito is at a more natural weight this season at 125 pounds,&#8221; Bentley said. &#8220;Last year he was giving up quite a bit of size but was still able to remain very competitive.&#8221;The coach feels that Pasone is capable of being one of the top eight in his class in the country.&#8220;It&#8217;s just a matter of him being consistent and performing the same way for the entire seven minutes of the match,&#8221; Bentley said. &#8220;I think that what sets him apart this year from past seasons is that he is doing a great job of wrestling well on the mat and doing the work it takes on top. I think that is going to pay big dividends for him as we work towards March.&#8221;The Mountaineers travel to Charleston, South Carolina, today to face The Citadel in a Southern Conference match.HARRIS GETTING BETTER: Christine Harris had a solid freshman season playing with the Buffalo State women&#8217;s hockey team, but the sophomore is really stepping it up this season.Harris, from Mountain Top (Wyoming Seminary), had seven goals and 11 assists in 26 games last season and already has four goals and four assists in 15 games this season. She had a goal in a 6-0 victory over Salem State last Saturday to give the Bengals a school record 12 wins.&#8220;Christine was able to step in as a freshman and have no problem keeping up to the speed and pace of the game,&#8221; coach Candice Moxley said. &#8220;She is versatile and has played both center and wing for us.&#8221;Moxley said she feels that Harris has been taking steps with her game and the coach really saw it when the Bengals defeated SUNY-Canton 7-4 and 4-0 on Jan. 9-10 in Canton, New York.&#8220;We saw one of her best games as a player with her second and third efforts and winning almost every puck race she was in,&#8221; Moxley said. &#8220;With one of the hardest shots and quick releases on our team it will only be a matter of time for her to find the back of the net more and be rewarded for her efforts.&#8221;POPPLE&#8217;S A VETERAN: Josh Popple is competing at 184 pounds with the Harvard wrestling team. The Coughlin grad is 4-5 overall and 1-3 in dual meets this season and has a 39-42 lifetime record with the Crimson.In the Pittsburgh Duals on Jan. 9, he pinned his opponent in 4:17 in a 40-3 victory over Bloomsburg but lost decisions in the other two matches.&#8220;Josh has been such a mainstay for us for the past five years,&#8221; coach Jay Weiss said. &#8220;Unfortunately, he has battled some serious injuries throughout his career which have held him back.&#8221;But Popple is finally in the lineup full time.&#8220;I am anxious for the last couple of months for him because he is someone who always competes hard,&#8221; Weiss said. &#8220;That&#8217;s infectious to his teammates. Josh has always been a great leader and makes those around him better.&#8221;The Crimson hosts Bucknell Saturday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.MILESTONE FOR MOORE: Rasheed Moore is just a junior, but he&#8217;s already scored more the 1,000 points in his career with the East Stroudsburg men&#8217;s basketball team.Moore, a Meyers grad, hit the milestone on Jan. 9 when he scored 10 points in a 87-60 victory over No. 22 West Chester. He added 12 points the next two games, both victories, and has scored 1,015 points in less than three seasons.&#8220;He&#8217;s just a junior and he still has 10 regular-season games remaining this year,&#8221; coach Jeff Wilson said. &#8220;He has developed considerably since his sophomore year.&#8221;The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder has been moved out and is playing more on the perimeter this season.&#8220;That makes him a very tough matchup as he can now stretch defenses with his perimeter game and also takes smaller defenders into the paint and score,&#8221; Wilson said.Moore, who is averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds for the 13-3 Warriors, is also a captain this season.&#8220;Rasheed has done a great job leading by example,&#8221; Wilson said. &#8220;He is one of the hardest workers in the program and has done a great job showing young guys how to be good college basketball player.&#8221;KOSHINSKI NATIONALLY RANKED: West Virginia freshman Kirah Koshinski has gotten her name on the stat list in NCAA Division I in women&#8217;s gymnastics. The Berwick grad is ranked sixth in the vault (9.887) and that has helped the Mountaineers move into 12th in the nation as a team.West Virginia is ranked fourth in the Southeast Region and Koshinski has made her way onto that leaderboard as well. She&#8217;s ranked second in vault, 12th on beam and 16th on floor exercise.And, in the Big 12 Conference, she&#8217;s ranked second on vault, seventh on beam.The Mountaineers will host a tri-meet against Western Michigan and William &amp; Mary Saturday in Morgantown.GILL HOPING TO BOUNCE BACK: Cassandra Gill finished 14th in the 5,000-meter run at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships as a freshman. The Holy Redeemer grad didn&#8217;t compete last season.&#8220;Cassandra had a bit of a rough time with injuries last year,&#8221; coach Ricardo Santos said. &#8220;She has worked hard to get back to where she is now and we hope that she will be back to competing soon.&#8221;Even though she isn&#8217;t competing, Gill is helping the Gaels in other areas.&#8220;Cassandra brings leadership to the program and even though it&#8217;s been a rough year she continues to work hard and that rubs off on her teammates,&#8221; Santos said.ASHBY PLAYS DEFENSE: Sophomore Eastin Ashby is averaging 8.7 points and 3.3 rebounds for the Emerson women&#8217;s basketball team, but the 5-foot-6 guard&#8217;s forte is defense. The Pittston Area grad leads the team with 37 steals. But coach Bill Gould feels it&#8217;s more than just steals.&#8220;Eastin has turned into more than just a reliable defender who gets steals,&#8221; the coach said. &#8220;We lost our top defender from last year and Eastin has become the player we assign to guard the other team&#8217;s top scorer. And, she&#8217;s done that while continuing to give us really good production at the offensive end of the court.&#8221;The Lions are 5-9 overall and 3-5 in the New England Women&#8217;s and Men&#8217;s Athletic Conference.<style>
