PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A police chief's daughter will be sentenced Monday in an attack on a gay couple that prompted Philadelphia to expand its hate crime laws to include sexual orientation. A lawyer for 25-year-old Kathryn Knott is expected to seek probation after a jury convicted her of simple assault and two other misdemeanors. Assistant District Attorney Michael Barry isn't commenting on whether he will seek the maximum two years in jail. Witnesses say Knott threw a punch, but she insists moved toward the fight to intervene. The attack occurred as Knott and her friends from suburban Bucks County were celebrating a birthday in downtown Philadelphia in 2014. The victims say someone shouted a gay slur, sparking a fight that left one victim with a broken jaw. Two male co-defendants got probation after pleading guilty.
