Local sports: Old Forge falls in PIAA Class A second round

<p>HAMBURG &#8212; They&#8217;re back.</p><p>Lydia Lawson, Rebecca Prociak and the rest of the Holy Redeemer Royals are rolling again, straight to a third straight state quarterfinal game.</p><p>Prociak scored four crucial points in the clutch, Lawson&#8217;s ball-handling led the way and Redeemer held off York Catholic, 52-43 in a second-round PIAA Class 2A girls basketball playoff game at Hamburg High School.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great,&#8221; Prociak said. &#8220;I&#8217;m really proud of our team.&#8221;</p><p>Under intense pressure, the Royals never collapsed.</p><p>Lawson saw to it, expertly navigating York Catholic&#8217;s relentless, full-court trapping defense that rarely backed off while dishing out six assists without a turnover.</p><p>Meanwhile, Prociak helped turn the tide by battling for seven of her 11 rebounds while scoring six points in the second quarter, when fellow senior Meghan Corridoni gave the Royals their first lead, 17-16, with a soft jumper just 3:15 before halftime.</p><p>&#8220;I was getting triple-teamed,&#8221; said Prociak, who watched her average of 25 points per game during the regular season sag a bit while opponents began swarming her in the postseason. &#8220;I knew I had to get it to my teammates.&#8221;</p><p>A whole cast of them helped pull Redeemer through the second round.</p><p>Senior Sara Flannelly came off the bench with hustle and energy to help the Royals overcome a first-half deficit, fellow senior Kayla Hons widened the Royals&#8217; lead with all nine of her points &#8212; on three 3-point field goals &#8212; in the first half and sophomore Sam Rajza made six critical points down the homestretch.</p><p>&#8220;I think we can keep going, keep winning,&#8221; Rajza said.</p><p>The 24-3 Royals are going into Friday&#8217;s Class 2A quarterfinals for a rematch with 26-1 Neumann-Goretti, the defending state champion which ended Redeemer&#8217;s 2014-15 season in last year&#8217;s state semifinals.</p><p>&#8220;I thought we came out and played pretty well,&#8221; Holy Redeemer coach Chris Parker said. &#8220;We didn&#8217;t play great. I expect us to play a lot better Friday night. We&#8217;re going to have to. We know what to expect. We met them last year. We know how talented they are. They&#8217;re very good.&#8221;</p><p>The Royals were good enough Tuesday to hold off a spunky York Catholic team, which finished 21-7.</p><p>Prociak followed three straight 3-pointers &#8212; one by Flannelly, two more by Hons &#8212; by muscling inside to score consecutive layups for a 33-22 Redeemer lead late in the first half.</p><p>But York Catholic wouldn&#8217;t go away.</p><p>The Fighting Irish hung around behind dogged inside defense from Jania Wright, Kathryn Rader and Emily Laslo, all 5-foot-10 or taller.</p><p>And in the fourth quarter, Katherine Bauhof twice pulled York Catholic within two points, using two free throws and a cutting layup to polish off her 19-point night.</p><p>&#8220;I knew that was not a good thing,&#8221; Prociak said.</p><p>But nerve-wracking?</p><p>Not for core group of Royals seniors who have now won eight state playoff games over the past three seasons and a total of 18 postseason games over that span.</p><p>&#8220;But I knew we were calm,&#8221; Prociak said. &#8220;We were in situations like this in league games all year. You have to have confidence. We don&#8217;t fold.&#8221;</p><p>Instead, the Royals raised the stakes.</p><p>Rajza, held scoreless to that point, drilled a 3-pointer to give the Royals a little breathing room with a 43-38 lead with 3:26 to play, then hit two foul shots nine second later to return Redeemer&#8217;s advantage to five points.</p><p>&#8220;They were taking us out of our game,&#8221; Rajza said. &#8220;They were triple-teaming Rebecca in the paint. When she kicked it back out, they were covering us really quick. We weren&#8217;t getting many easy shots. I knew I could step up and make a big shot. After I made the 3, I just got my confidence to shoot. And my teammates had my back.&#8221;</p><p>Prociak put the Royals on her back in the clutch.</p><p>She worked inside, drew a foul, and hit both free throws to give the Royals a 47-43 edge with 1:45 remaining. Then Prociak pretty much iced the game when she swooped in after a foul shot by the Royals bounced out, grabbed the rebound and swished a fall-away 10-footer with a hand in her face the took Redeemer&#8217;s lead to eight points with 25 seconds left.</p><p>Game over.</p><p>&#8220;I felt like I was going to grow hair at the end of the game,&#8221; Parker joked. &#8220;That&#8217;s what the state playoffs is about, you&#8217;re going to run into good teams. It was tough.
