Letter to the Editor: Raising taxes won’t make Pennsylvania prosper – or solve schools’ problems

Illegal immigration is the biggest red herring of the current political landscape.Now, before you get all worked up about it, let me make my case. I&#8217;m not going to get into all the &#8220;free stuff&#8221; arguments that illegal immigrants are profiting from our broken immigration system, or about &#8220;the wall.&#8221; Rather, I am going to ask a few questions. No doubt there are major problems that need to be addressed, and for some reason they are not. Why is that? If you are like me, a U.S. citizen, you have been required to show proof of citizenship, or a work permit, when you were hired for a job. This has been a requirement since at least 1985. How, then, are illegal immigrants being hired? Someone is hiring them, but who?Why are there so few prosecutions related to this practice? Evidently, someone is profiting from this practice, and, for the most part, I can guarantee it is not the majority of Americans. Rather it is the &#8220;job creators&#8221; at the top of the income scale who profit. Now, let&#8217;s think about this in relation to Congress. For at least the last three years, with the GOP-controlled Senate and House, there has been an opportunity to pass the most draconian immigration laws you can think of, but it has not been done. There&#8217;s been a lot of chatter, but no action. In fact, funding for enforcement of immigration laws has been reduced (hmmm). Congress can vote a ridiculous number of times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they can&#8217;t get immigration reform through? Really?Threat of a presidential veto is obviously moot, because they have sent up plenty of legislation that they knew would be vetoed. Why not immigration reform? Could it be that those same legislators and presidential candidates are being influenced (bribed) not to act by the various big-money interests that profit from our &#8220;broken&#8221; system.To those who take advantage of the situation, the system is not broken, it is working just the way they want it to, thank you very much. This is what I mean by a red herring, using the rhetoric around illegal immigration to divide the populace, yet being completely unwilling to do anything about it.It is the height of hypocrisy to profit from something you abhor.
