Supreme Court bolsters political influence of US Latinos

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A serial rapist&#8217;s sobbing victim on Monday described the damaging effects left on her in the wake of a vicious sexual assault.</p><p>&#8220;In my nightmare,&#8221; the victim said, &#8220;I wake up and see his face.&#8221;</p><p>Michael Angelo Foschini Jr. was stoic in Luzerne County Court as two of his victims described their personal trauma from separate incidents in which prosecutors say the Nanticoke man coerced them into his vehicle, drove them to isolated cemeteries and threatened to slit their throats or stab them if they didn&#8217;t give in to his demands.</p><p>A second tearful victim said the attack strained her relationship with her family and left her in a constant state of fear.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m afraid of everything and everybody,&#8221; she said, choking back tears. &#8220;I&#8217;m not able to be the grandmother I should be right now because I&#8217;m afraid and ashamed. He&#8217;s taken me away from my family.&#8221;</p><p>For his actions, Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas sentenced Foschini, 26, to 24 to 48 years in state prison for the 2011 and 2012 rape and kidnapping of the two women as well as on charges stemming from a 2014 attack on a third female who Foschini shot in the head after a dispute over cash. Foschini <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/524142/nanticoke-man-who-shot-woman-in-head-pleads-guilty-to-kidnapping-rape" target="_blank">previously pleaded guilty</a> to the charges.</p><p>Assistant District Attorney Nancy Violi called the rapes &#8220;the worst a person can imagine happening to a woman.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;The brutal nature of what he did to these women, it&#8217;s really shocking,&#8221; Violi said outside the courtroom.</p><p>State police said the victim from 2012 claimed Foschini drove her to a Plymouth Township cemetery on <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/local/376533/nanticoke-man-charged-with-raping-second-woman" target="_blank">Nov. 16, 2012</a>, where he threatened her with a knife and forced her to perform oral sex on him before he raped her. The victim told police Foschini made her tell him she liked being raped. He then drove off and left the victim alone in the cemetery.</p><p>Foschini was charged in July on similar allegations he abducted and then raped a woman at knifepoint in another Plymouth Township cemetery on <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/local/374795/nanticoke-man-charged-with-kidnapping-raping-woman-in-2011" target="_blank">Dec. 13, 2011</a>. The victim told investigators Foschini told her he knew where she lived and not to call the police.</p><p>Police connected Foschini to the rapes, which had been unsolved, when they got a match to DNA evidence taken from him during a previous investigation into a Wilkes-Barre shooting in which Foschini shot a woman in the head with a .22-caliber rifle in the area of Willow Street and Gordon Avenue on Dec. 12, 2014. The two had been arguing over money, police said.</p><p>While some supporters on Monday described Foschini as &#8220;helpful&#8221; and &#8220;always respectful,&#8221; Foschini himself offered only a brief acknowledgement of regret.</p><p>&#8220;I just want to apologize,&#8221; a shackled Foschini said.</p><p>Defense attorney Joseph F. Sklarosky Sr. said Foschini was &#8220;profusely apologetic&#8221; for those he&#8217;d hurt, but noted Foschini had &#8220;fallen into the trap of many young people&#8221; who wind up doing drugs and getting into trouble.</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s prepared to pay society back for what he&#8217;s done,&#8221; Sklarosky said.</p><style>
