High school students want more out of presidential candidates

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Kingston residents came to the Kirby Center for Creative Arts on the campus of Wyoming Seminary Saturday to tell stories about their hometown and have them recorded by producers from WVIA.</p><p>The resulting videos will be use in the documentary &#8220;Our Town: Kingston,&#8221; one of series of programs highlighting local communities on the public television station. &#8220;Our Town: Kingston&#8221; will premiere on June 2.</p><p>Producer Lisa Mazzarella said the program has been a labor of love for her since it began six years ago.</p><p>The show comes down to people, she said.</p><p>&#8220;Sometimes when people go up in their attics to find information for the show, they are also learning about themselves,&#8221; Mazzarella said. &#8220;They&#8217;ll find a photo of a loved one, and they&#8217;ll have a chance to share it with their children.&#8221;</p><p>History, she said, needs to be purposefully and creatively shared with the next generation.</p><p>Isabel Pisaneschi, a Kingston resident for 60 years, participated in the project to share information about the history of the municipality&#8217;s schools.</p><p>&#8220;Before Bishop O&#8217; Reilly was Bishop O&#8217;Reilly, it was West Side Central Catholic,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Kingston High School came before Wyoming Valley West.&#8221;</p><p>Pisaneschi researched the subject, but much of her knowledge is also personal.</p><p>&#8220;My sisters went to West Side and my daughter went to Bishop O&#8217;Reilly,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Sandy Acornely, of the Kingsont Active Adult Center, is providing the project with the history of her facility, which is now on Third Avenue.</p><p>Not only has the center moved several times, it has also changed in regard to its atmosphere and activities.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve always offered a meal, but now we offer programs, such as belly dancing and other exercise programs,&#8221; Acornley said.</p><p>The center adopted the name Active Adult Center several years ago to reflect the fact that many of the seniors who use the facility remain busy and productive.</p><p>&#8220;Most of our attendees drive themselves to the center,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Rev. Paul Metzloff, of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, said he was providing a piece of the church&#8217;s history.</p><p>&#8220;The church is always part of a community because it is made up of people,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People are history.&#8221;</p><p>Mazzarella, who said WVIA has produced more than 25 &#8220;Our Town&#8221; documentaries, said that although the process is the same for each town, the end result is very different.</p><p>&#8220;Each town has its own pulse, rhythm, politics and dynamics,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what makes each program unique and different.&#8221;</p><p>Mazzarella said often people are initially reluctant speak on camera, but once they start, their desire to tell their stories takes over and they always do very well.</p><p>She said she never fails to be impressed with the towns and the people.</p><p>&#8220;They somehow understand how important it is,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It creates a touchstone for future generations.&#8221;</p><style>
