<p>DUNMORE &#8212; Hillary Clinton had the crowd eating out of her hand from the beginning, mentioning Lake Winola, Scranton and promising to bring good jobs to the region.</p><p>&#8220;I believe we can still make it in America,&#8221; she said at a campaign Dunmore High School. &#8220;We will knock down the barriers and we will raise the minimum wage.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton said the state of the economy, the low wages and lack of benefits &#8220;is a disgrace.&#8221; She followed that with a vow to bring equal pay for equal work for women.&#8221;</p><p>She said, &#8220;We have to raise wages for everybody. In fact, the economy is always better with a Democrat in the White House.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton said health care must be affordable &#8212; she said she will defend the Affordable Health Care Act &#8212; and there needs to be more treatment for mental health problems. She said she favors reducing or eliminating co-pays and she will lower the cost of prescription drugs.</p><p>&#8220;Two things I hear most about are mental health and addiction,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When I shake the hand of a mother, father, brother or sister of a mental health patient, they look at me and tell me they need help.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton told a story of a person who lost a friend to a heroin overdose.</p><p>&#8220;He said he couldn&#8217;t get help to try to kick the habit,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When you need help, there aren&#8217;t enough places to get help. (We will) remove the stigma of mental health and we will tackle the opioid issue.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton vowed to find ways to revitalize cities &#8220;like Scranton and Wilkes-Barre&#8221; by creating those good-paying jobs and creating affordable housing.</p><p>Then Clinton mentioned issues important to many residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><p>&#8220;I will never let the Republicans privatize Social Security, Medicare or the VA system,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And we must keep our unions strong by guaranteeing the right to bargain. That raises the base for everybody.&#8221;</p><p>Saying she is prepared to &#8220;walk into the buzz saw,&#8221; Clinton said she will take on the fight for common sense gun safety.</p><p>&#8220;I learned how to shoot a gun behind our Lake Winola cottage,&#8221; Clinton said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve gone duck hunting, and I know how important gun rights are to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania. But we have to take the guns off of criminals and reduce gun violence without infringing upon the anyone&#8217;s Second Amendment rights.&#8221;</p><p>Then Clinton turned her talk to the people, saying the time has come to work together, to find common ground.</p><p>&#8220;We have serious issues facing us,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We need to discuss those issues, but we have to put politics aside and find common ground to get solutions to these problems.&#8221;</p><p>Talking like a candidate who has secured her party&#8217;s nomination, Clinton turned to Republican hopefuls Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, saying both have &#8220;some scary ideas.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton said she has visited some 117 countries as secretary of state and she knows how critical national security is.</p><p>As she approached her closing, Clinton brought the crowd to its feet time and again.</p><p>&#8220;I know some of those campaign speeches of my opponents, often filled with lies, get big responses at their rallies,&#8221; Clinton said. &#8220;But is it smart to put them out there?&#8221;</p><p>Clinton said the U.S. &#8220;has to be smart&#8221; and prevent more countries from securing nuclear weapons.</p><p>&#8220;In this job, we need a commander-in-chief, as well as a president,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Clinton favors making college affordable and debt free. She said too many students decide to delay entry into college or they leave because of the high costs.</p><p>&#8220;Our children deserve a good education, regardless of their zip code,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Clinton said she will unify the country.</p><p>&#8220;You always hear the back and forth in these political campaigns,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s typical, but when it&#8217;s over, we must work together to make the country strong. And you can always hold me accountable.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton said she wants to create a bright future for America. She said she wants to be a champion for all America.</p><p>As she left the stage, Clinton shook hands with many of the more than 1,200 in attendance.</p><p>At the beginning, Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright said, &#8220;Hillary is for us, for Pennsylvania and for the United States of America.&#8221;</p><p>U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, called Clinton &#8220;a real person, a kind person. She likes people. She cares about you, she cares about people and and she will make a great president.&#8221;</p><p>U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, brought Clinton to the stage as the capacity crowd rose to its feet at Dunmore High School.</p><p>&#8220;We are honored to be here tonight with the next president of the United States,&#8221; Casey said. &#8220;She has the ability and the record to do the job.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Pre-event stop</strong></p><p>Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton landed at Wilkes-Barre Scranton/International Airport at 6:39 p.m. and made a quick stop at a local restaurant before heading to her scheduled campaign event at Dunmore High School.</p><p>Hillary arrived at Casa Bella Restaurant at 7:37 p.m. to a greeting of screams and applause. &#8220;It&#8217;s always good to be in Scranton, &#8221; she said.</p><p>Clinton made her way around the crowded room, pausing for selfies, smiles and hugs. Her brothers, Hugh and Tony Rodham, greeted her at the door.</p><p><strong>On the issues:</strong></p><p><strong>Campaign finance:</strong> Clinton favors overturning the U.S. Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling for Citizens United. She said she will appoint Supreme Court justices who value the right to vote over the right of billionaires to buy elections and will push for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United in order to restore the role of everyday voters in elections.</p><p><strong>Climate change:</strong> Clinton will create good-paying jobs by making the U.S. the clean energy superpower of the 21st century.</p><p><strong>Wall Street reform:</strong> Clinton will tackle dangerous risks in the big banks and elsewhere in the financial system and hold both individuals and corporations accountable when they break the law.</p><p><strong>Women&#8217;s rights:</strong> She will ensure equal pay for women; defend women&#8217;s health and reproductive rights against attacks; and fight for paid family leave and affordable child care.</p><p><strong>Gun violence:</strong> Clinton intends to strengthen background checks and close dangerous loopholes in the current system. She will hold irresponsible dealers and manufacturers accountable and keep guns out of the hands of terrorists, domestic abusers, other violent criminals and the severely mentally ill.</p><style>
