Syracuse smacks RailRiders with a fourth straight loss

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival brings dancing, rides and food to Kirby Park

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Hundreds gathered on Saturday to get their hands on some heavy equipment at the second annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser on the grounds of the Good Shepherd Academy.</p><p>Adults and children alike marveled at the high-tech machines, including fire engines, communications trucks, construction vehicles, crime fighting units, emergency vehicles and other vehicles.</p><p>Jim Jones, principal of the school for the last nine years, said about $15 million worth of hardware was on display.</p><p>&#8220;The moms and dads enjoy climbing in the trucks as much as the children,&#8221; Jones said. &#8220;They enjoy the chance to get engaged.&#8221;</p><p>Corporate sponsors included UGI, Ken Pollock Auto Group, the Gertrude Hawk Company and Lanes Cranes.</p><p>More than 50 volunteers and students from the school conducted tours for families interested in enrolling there, Jones added. They also assisted in the event&#8217;s setup and cleanup and provided service to the visitors.</p><p>Mitch Quinn, sales manager from Ken Pollock Nissan and member of the Guardian Parent Teacher Organization at Good Shepherd Academy, helped organize the event.</p><p>&#8220;It went better than planned,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Everyone had a smile on their face.&#8221;</p><p>Quinn said the sponsors really came through for the school. He also pointed out that the committee members and the school administration pulled together for a successful effort.</p><p>The event raised funds for programs to benefit families in need, help with uniform costs and other programs for the children.</p><p>It also helped build &#8220;community awareness,&#8221; Quinn added.</p><p>&#8220;Part of our mission is to attract new families,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Quinn is confident the event will grow in the future based on its success in its first two years.</p><style>
