Man pleads guilty to attempting to run down cop, drug charges

<p>I recently finished reading a book by John Keegan, a British historian. Mr. Keegan&#8217;s book takes us back to the 1940s and the war.</p><p>He reminds us that World War II was the largest single event in the history of mankind. You learn that the war, which lasted six years, took 60 million lives. It was fought on six of the seven continents and on all of the seas. It was an event of such magnitude that it took 50 years to come to grips with it, to get perspective on it. The war was fought in the hot desert sands of Africa, the Aleutian Islands, from the steamy jungles of the South Pacific to the frigid North Atlantic.</p><p>The book tells us of the millions of young men and women who left their homes and lives behind to do battle, and that in 1944 the United States had 16 million service personnel under arms.</p><p>And in the end, the war&#8217;s participants, now in their mortality zone, look back saying: &#8220;Whatever else I did in my life, I did that.
