RICE TWP. &#8212; The Spartans needed one run. They were hoping for two. They got five.Trailing by a run heading into the seventh inning on Tuesday, Wyoming Valley West managed to check off every box on the list.A five-run outburst gave the Spartans a 9-5 victory at Crestwood. The win avenged their only league loss of the season. And, for good measure, it clinched a second straight WVC Division 1 title for the program.Not that they were focusing too much on that last one.Capturing the division crown wasn&#8217;t a topic of conversation in the visitors dugout after the game. Not for a team that was one hit away from a state championship 11 months ago.&#8220;Not even on our mind,&#8221; Spartans coach John Milius said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not worried about titles. What we&#8217;re doing is trying to win one at a time.&#8221;This one came tougher than most this season.Valley West (10-1) had been shut down by the Comets and pitcher James Graves in their first meeting back in April, a 1-0 win for Crestwood. It looked to be headed that way again as the Comets took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning.The Spartans took advantage of a pair of errors to take a 4-3 lead on a two-run single by Zach Sott and RBIs from Ryan Hogan and Justin Vought. Crestwood answered with two in the bottom of the sixth, looking to close it out in the seventh for the season sweep.But the Spartans stayed patient at the plate as the first six batters of the frame reached base. Tyler Yankosky and Dominick Bayo each drew a bases loaded walk for the tying and winning runs, respectively. Vought (3-4, two doubles, RBI) scored on a wild pitch.Eric Raitter followed it all up by coming off the bench to deliver a two-run single to put the game away.&#8220;They don&#8217;t quit,&#8221; Milius said. &#8220;They&#8217;re resilient. They come back. They want it. We lost to them 1-0 &#8212; same pitcher. So they wanted it.&#8220;They&#8217;re pretty mature. Last year, they were juniors. Now they&#8217;re seniors, who&#8217;ve seen a lot of play, a lot of tense situations.&#8221;Grant Powell went six innings for the win, striking out four. Yankosky came on for a 1-2-3 seventh to finish out the Spartans&#8217; sixth straight victory.For the Comets (5-6), Corey Chalk came through twice in the early going, driving in a run on a fielder&#8217;s choice in the second and two more with a single in the fourth.In the sixth, it was Valley West nemesis Graves who put Crestwood ahead with an RBI single to put his team up 5-4. It added up to an impressive two-game set for the junior, who pitched 12.1 innings against the Spartans, allowing just one earned run on nine hits.&#8220;He&#8217;s been able to be wild in the strike zone &#8212; every strike he&#8217;s thrown is right on the corner,&#8221; Crestwood coach Tony Caladie said. &#8220;I think he&#8217;s done a great job.&#8220;You never know about a pitcher, but I think he was just getting tired at the end. That&#8217;s one of those things that I need to do a better job of, because the first walk was the beginning of the end. But he&#8217;s been great all year.&#8221;Seven different Crestwood players recorded at least one hit with Tim Kindler going 3 for 4.The Comets had beaten 4A squads Hazleton Area and Valley West back-to-back last month and they nearly pulled off the feat again in May. Crestwood was one hitter away from erasing a 6-0 deficit on Monday against the Cougars.Wyoming Area and undefeated Valley View will be on top of the Class 3A bracket in District 2, but the rest of the field looks to be fairly even.&#8220;I&#8217;m looking forward to it, and I know our guys are,&#8221; Caladie said. &#8220;What we need to do is say, &#8216;Hey, we&#8217;ve got two more league games left, and we need to get back on track. Now.&#8217;&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to go into the playoffs on a long losing streak. We&#8217;ve got to pick up a couple here. We&#8217;re going to give it everything we&#8217;ve got.&#8221;Coughlin 4, Hazleton Area 3The Crusaders (4-7) forced extra innings with two runs in the seventh and won it in the ninth as Chase Nowak&#8217;s infield single led to a throwing error that brought home the go-ahead run.Hazleton put the tying run on second in the bottom of the frame before Leroy Fettig struck out two batters to get the win. Nowak was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.Alex Klein had two hits and an RBI for the Cougars (5-5).Hanover Area 7, Meyers 2Kyle Kowalski struck out six in a complete-game victory and the Hawkeyes (5-6) got back on track with a win at home. Kevin Rimmer doubled and drove in three runs while Matt Clarke and Austin Gately each had two hits and an RBI.The Mohawks (7-4) got singles from six different players.Northwest 8, MMI Prep 0David Piestrak pitched a one-hitter, striking out five with just one walk for the Rangers (8-4) while going 3 for 3 at the plate. Eric Evans also added three hits, finishing with a triple and an RBI.George Palermo had the lone hit for the Preppers (1-10).Holy Redeemer 6, GAR 0The Royals became the first team to finish their WVC schedule, recording a 12th straight win in league play to finish 13-1.
