WILKES-BARRE &#8212; With intense interest, the Meyers Mohawks gathered around the high jump and pulled for a teammate to finish second.When he did, the Mohawks wound up in first.Tim Snyder, Mark Robinson and Simran Magnat both won in two events Tuesday and Je&#8217;Vondrea McClair secured victory with his runner-up high jump finish as short-handed Meyers won the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys track and field title by edging rival Hanover Area, 76-74 in a battle of league unbeatens at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.&#8220;It feels great,&#8221; Snyder said. &#8220;We weren&#8217;t sure (of victory) the whole way along. Everybody stepped up when they needed to.&#8221;Especially Snyder.His strong run in the 3,200-meter relay helped the Mohawks get out to a strong start, and his one-second win in the 400 prevented Hanover Area&#8217;s electric sprinter Muhammed Chesson from winning four times on the day, and may have turned the meet in Meyers&#8217; favor.&#8220;Tim is probably one of the best, and hardest-working, kids I&#8217;ve ever coached in 20-some years,&#8221; said Gaylon White, who came out of retirement to spend the past few seasons as a Hanover Area assistant before returning this season as the Meyers head coach. &#8220;He does everything you ever ask.&#8220;Every workout is to his maximum potential,&#8221; White continued. &#8220;He just reaches that level where it brings him to another level.&#8220;He showed that today.&#8221;Hanover Area showed some spirit in the girls meet, taking an 81-67 victory over Meyers when Asdone Hooper won the shot put and javelin throws and Nina Lamoreux took the long and triple jumps.The boys meet came down to the very last jumps.With Meyers holding a 73-69 lead, the Mohawks needed at least a second-place finish in the high jump to capture the meet &#8212; and the league crown.McClair produced it, with a leap of 5-10 that sent his anxious Mohawks teammates into a series of flying chest and hip bumps. He finished No. 2 in the event, behind the 6-foot jump of Hanover Area&#8217;s Nick Minnich, but ensured the Mohawks finished No. 1 by securing a 7-0 WVC record in their regular season finale.&#8220;That put us over the top,&#8221; White said.Hanover Area fell to 5-1, with a makeup meet against Northwest scheduled for Thursday.&#8220;The dual meets are nice and winning the league championship is great for the kids,&#8221; White said. &#8220;But we always talk about our ultimate goal being districts and states.&#8221;That&#8217;s why Raheem Twyman was missing from Tuesday&#8217;s action.The Mohawks star senior, a returning state silver medalist in the 300-meter hurdles, has been battling a slight hip flexor problem didn&#8217;t perform in competition for the second consecutive Meyers team meet.&#8220;The doctor told me if we wait another week, he&#8217;ll be 100 percent for districts,&#8221; White said of the upcoming District 2 Class 2A championship meet next Tuesday at Scranton Memorial Stadium. &#8220;He has a shot at being a state champion. We had a long talk with him. I told him if we came out (Tuesday) and he aggravated the injury, I wouldn&#8217;t be able to live with myself. We held him out today, he&#8217;ll start workouts later in the week.&#8221;The Mohawks received some positive news when standout mid-distance runner Rudy Rivera, who left Saturday&#8217;s Cross Invitational on crutches with a quad injury, showed up against Hanover Area ready to run.He was limited, though, finishing second behind Magnat in the 800 and joined Magnat and Snyder on the winning 3,200 relay.But the Mohawks persevered without their usual multiple wins from two of the team&#8217;s top competitors.Robinson won the long jump and was on the 400 relay team. Meyers picked up nine of the meet&#8217;s 15 third-place finishes.That helped offset the performance by Chesson, who won the 100 and 200 dashes and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay that gave the Hawkeyes a shot at victory entering the high jump.&#8220;Our kids did a very good job today, we had good times,&#8221; Hanover Area coach Al Weston said. &#8220;They didn&#8217;t have Twyman, but we did a good job. You look back at several events, in a close meet like this, it&#8217;s all third places. Those (one-point) third places are like two points.&#8221;And in the end, two points turned out to be enough to give the Mohawks a league crown.&#8220;I think it shows we just have a lot of depth,&#8221; Snyder said, &#8220;and a lot of young talent coming up. We came into this knowing we were all going to have to work hard together, do some things we don&#8217;t usually do.&#8220;It took a lot of work.&#8221;BoysWyoming Area 97, Lake-Lehman 53Tristan Sokach-Minnich and Ryan Murray both won two individual events as the Warriors closed out the regular season with a victory.Sokach-Minnich won the discus and javelin throws, while Murray took the long jump and triple jump.Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Dominic Hockenbury won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs and Black Knights sprinter Nick Eury won the 100 and 200 meter dashes.GirlsWyoming Area 91, Lake-Lehman 59Wyoming Area&#8217;s Shelby Stackhouse prepped for districts by prevailing in four events, taking the 100 hurdles, pole vault, high jump and long jump.
