SWB RailRiders bats stay cool in loss to Pawtucket Red Sox

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8211; For the better part of an hour, two empty courts separated Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Eamon Gibbons and Scranton Prep&#8217;s Pete Kazmiercziak and the rest of the remaining competition, allowing the two ample room to spar back and forth to the delight of the Kirby Park crowd.</p><p>It was all for nothing ultimately. Scranton Prep&#8217;s No. 2 doubles team of Sahil Greg and Jack Habeeb took care of their opponent to seal a 3-0 victory Wednesday for the Cavaliers&#8217; fourth-consecutive District 2 Class 2A boys tennis championship.</p><p>Scranton Prep will face the loser of Thursday&#8217;s District 3 final between Wyomissing and Lancaster Country Day on Tuesday in the PIAA tournament.</p><p>Trailing 3-2 in the second set, Greg and Habeeb earned a key win, down 40-15 on the Blue Knights&#8217; serve, to start the comeback. The Cavaliers&#8217; duo won three of the final four games to close out the 6-4, 6-4 match.</p><p>&#8220;Well, it was a very fine match,&#8221; Prep coach Kathleen McKenna said. &#8220;Seminary played well. I thought that our (No. 2) doubles team pulled it out to end it. They played well in the first set, and the other team was coming back in the second.&#8221;</p><p>Gibbons faced the most grueling matches of the day, and both of his decisions resulted in a halt. At No. 1 singles, he and Kazmierczak went nine points in the first set without breaking serve. Kazmierczak finally broke Gibbons via a double-fault for a 6-4 win.</p><p>&#8220;Just a little bit of nerves,&#8221; Gibbons said. &#8220;He hit a few good returns in that game. I hit some poor serves and double-faulted to end it. It&#8217;s something to move on.&#8221;</p><p>Gibbons played him tough again in the second set before it was halted at 5-3. The Blue Knight junior had a similar result in the semifinal match earlier in the day. Gibbons won the first set 6-4 and was tied 4-4 with Holy Cross&#8217; Jim Tressler before the match was halted.</p><p>Both Kazmierczak and Tressler will be likely foes in the district singles tournament.</p><p>&#8220;It was one of my better days,&#8221; Gibbons said. &#8220;It&#8217;s good playing against guys of this caliber. I usually don&#8217;t get to see them throughout the season. It was very fun play.&#8221;</p><p>At No. 1 doubles, Andrew Schukraft and Andrew Kim won the Blue Knights&#8217; lone set of the finals in a 3-6, 6-3, 3-0 match that was halted.</p><p>Dallas fell to Scranton Prep 3-0 in the semifinals held earlier in the afternoon. The Mountaineers lost all three singles matches in quick fashion, winning a combined one point between the three flights.</p><p>In doubles, Dallas&#8217; Anthony Brominski and Cameron Tuck dominated the first set 6-2 and were leading 1-0 before the Cavs&#8217; scored their third point. Joe Bevevino and Adam Niznik were tied 5-5 in the first set.</p><p>&#8220;Pretty much what our team has been throughout the year,&#8221; Dallas coach Joe Pugliese said. &#8220;Our top five players are at about the same level. So we do well in our lower singles and doubles as this match kind of proved. With these bigger teams, we can&#8217;t just hang with their singles players.&#8221;</p><p>Wyoming Seminary won 3-0 over Holy Cross in the district semis. Sam Desi won the No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4 over Eric Macarski.
