MOOSIC &#8212; Throughout a long season, teams will go through hitting funks.The RailRiders are currently in one of those slumps. On Wednesday night, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost to Pawtucket 2-1 to lose for the third time in their last four games.In those losses, the RailRiders have gone just 2 for 26 with runners in scoring position and left 30 runners on base, which includes Wednesday&#8217;s stats of 1 for 8 with runners on second or third and leaving nine on base.&#8220;Anytime you lose a game, regardless it gets frustrating, at least I&#8217;m happy and pleased with the effort offensively tonight (because) we hit some balls on the nose,&#8221; RailRiders manager Al Pedrique said. &#8220;We&#8217;re frustrated because we know we have a good team and we&#8217;re not getting the breaks right now.&#8221;One of the lone highlights for the RailRiders was when Matt Wotherspoon, a Crestwood alum, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He has started his Triple-A and RailRiders career with six scoreless innings in three games, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six.After tossing a scoreless eighth, Wotherspoon loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a hit batter while getting one out in the ninth before getting replaced by Mark Montgomery, who got the last two outs to strand the bases loaded. With a devastating slider, Montgomery got a strikeout on Bryce Brentz before getting Mike Miller to groundout.&#8220;He (Montgomery) was aggressive and kept the slider down,&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;I thought it was a good one tonight and he got out of the jam.&#8221;A two-run homer by Pawtucket&#8217;s Blake Swihart into the bullpen in left field off starter Richard Bleier (1-1) gave the PawSox a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.The RailRiders got one of those runs back in the fifth inning when Jake Cave, who was promoted from Trenton before the game, blasted a triple to deep center and scored on a double by Aaron Judge, pulling them within a run at 2-1.But they had problems against rehabbing Boston pitcher Joe Kelly, who made his second start for the PawSox since impingement in his right shoulder placed him on the Major League disabled list. Kelly went five innings, allowing just the one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three.The RailRiders had two hits in the top of the first inning with one out, but Kelly got the next two batters out. The next time SWB had a scoring chance against Kelly came in the fifth.Rob Refsnyder, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 19 straight with an infield single in the fourth inning, doubled to lead off the sixth inning.
