Holy Redeemer wouldn&#8217;t mind seeing history repeat itself. That would mean a trip back to Penn State for the PIAA Class 2A state softball championship game and another state title.As for Hazleton Area, it would prefer to forget the past when it comes to the state competition. The Cougars haven&#8217;t been able to get out of the Class 4A first round for three consecutive years, with the District 3 runner-up ending their season each time.Redeemer and Hazleton Area, the only Wyoming Valley Conference teams to win District 2 titles, will be in action Monday. Hazleton Area will play D3 runner-up Penn Manor at 5 p.m. at Wilkes University. Redeemer goes up against D4 champion Milton at 4 p.m. at the Moser Complex in Turbotville.There&#8217;s also a doubleheader at Marywood University involving Lackawanna League teams which won District 2 championships. D2-A champ Lackawanna Trail plays D4 champion Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. D2-3A champ Abington Heights plays D3 runner-up Greencastle-Antrim at 5 p.m.Here&#8217;s a look at the two state games involving WVC team.Holy Redeemer vs. MiltonPIAA 2A First Round4 p.m. MondayMoser Complex, TurbotvilleRedeemer (21-3) enters the 2A state playoffs as the defending champion. The Royals, though, are somewhat different than the team which rallied to defeat Deer Lakes for the PIAA 2A title in 2015.&#8220;I think they are actually getting there,&#8221; Redeemer coach Jerry Paulukonis said. &#8220;This last game may have built that up a little bit more. I&#8217;ve seen it at practice, a little more intensity.&#8221;The pitching duo of Kristen Coffay and Morgan Bienkowski remains. Both are also key hitters in the lineup and one will be the shortstop when the other is pitching. Also back from the state championship squad are third baseman Brittany Hebda, second baseman Olivia Menning, left fielder Sam Rajza and catcher Abby Shorts.A pair of freshmen outfielders &#8212; Tiana Wren and Allyson Laiuvara &#8212; and Nanticoke transfer Meghan Armstrong (first base) have filled the gaps nicely. Wren has shown long-ball ability. Liauvara has been a table setter at the top of the order. Armstrong has a knack for getting key hits.&#8220;Tiana especially. She&#8217;s doing really, really well,&#8221; Paulukonis said. &#8220;But just like any other freshmen, they get a little anxious so you have to get them to be patient. That&#8217;s what they have to learn. Sometimes they try to do a little bit too much. They need to learn to relax, hit the ball hard and let things fall as they may.&#8221;Redeemer escaped two close calls on the way to its second consecutive District 2 crown. The Royals defeated Elk Lake 3-2 in the first round when Mennig scored a walk-off run after Elk Lake flubbed a rundown. They needed nine innings to edge Mid Valley 5-4 for the championship and were behind on two occasions, including going into the bottom of the ninth.Milton (21-2) won its first District 4 Class 2A title since 2012 and sixth in 11 years, but the accomplishment certainly wasn&#8217;t easy. After defeating Montoursville 5-0 in the district opener, the Black Panthers needed walk-off hits to defeat Central Columbia 3-2 in nine innings and defending champ Wellsboro 2-1.Kacee Reitz had the game-winning hits in the last two games. She had both RBI against Wellsboro, including one on a single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Madi East against Wellsboro. Milton, though, is a team which relies heavily on pitcher Kylie Brouse.Brouse has thrown consecutive no-hitters this year, with one of them being a perfect game.The winner advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday and play the winner of Monday&#8217;s game between D3 champion Kutztown and D12 runner-up Philadelphia Academy Charter.Hazleton Area vs. Penn ManorPIAA 4A First Round5 p.m. MondayWilkes UniversityHazleton Area won its fourth consecutive District 2 Class 4A crown with a 2-0 victory over Williamsport. Now the trick is to keep the season going, something the Cougars have failed to do the past three years. Each time, they&#8217;ve been eliminated by the District 3 runner-up.And who does Hazleton Area (20-1) play in the first round Monday? D3 runner-up Penn Manor (22-4).&#8220;We&#8217;ve been talking about that the last couple of days at practice,&#8221; Hazleton Area first-year coach Heather Dale said. &#8220;Their mentality has changed. They are a lot more confident going into this game. They are thinking it&#8217;s just another game; not to play nervous it&#8217;s just another game. They are really looking forward to it.&#8221;Experience might have alleviated those jitters. The battery of pitcher Celine Podlesney and catcher Hope Kinney is tested. The infield boasts a couple veterans in first baseman Megan Trivelpiece and shortstop Mackenzie Yori. The newcomers have performed as well as the Cougars were able to extend their WVC winning streak to 22 games by going 15-0 this season.The hitting, though, is a bit of a concern. The bats didn&#8217;t come alive against Williamsport until the latter innings. The offense has scored just two runs in each of the last two games.&#8220;I think we&#8217;ll be OK,&#8221; Dale said. &#8220;We told them from here on out every game is going to be pretty much a one-run ball game. As long as we can manufacture one or two runs, possibly three, that&#8217;s going to win it. And our defense is pretty solid.&#8221;Runs could be at a premium against Penn Manor. Pitcher Brittany Hook has 15 shutouts. She held Chambersburg scoreless through nine innings in the D3 title game before losing 1-0.The Penn Manor lineup is full of Lancaster-Lebanon League all-stars. Besides Hook, catcher Samantha Duplissey, first baseman Morgan Yingling and outfielder Danielle Wright were selected as all-stars.The winner moves to Thursday&#8217;s quarterfinals and will play the winner on Monday&#8217;s game between District 1 champ Perkiomen Valley and D3 fourth seed Dallastown.<style>
