<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; Learning about a spy who worked for the nation&#8217;s first president and other notable figures was part of a lesson on local history for folks who visited Hanover Green Cemetery on Sunday.</p><p>The nonprofit Hanover Green Cemetery Association held its inaugural Heritage Day celebration, which included a marker dedication to Capt. Andrew Lee in honor of the cemetery&#8217;s 240th anniversary.</p><p>Complete with guided tours, re-enactments and guest speakers, dozens of visitors made their way through the long, twisting path of the burial grounds to learn more about is deep history and permanent residents.</p><p>State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Wilkes-Barre, began the ceremony with a proclamation, noting the importance of the cemetery&#8217;s history, before handing over a certificate to the event&#8217;s master of ceremonies, Len Luba.</p><p>&#8220;This is truly a historic day,&#8221; Pashinski said. &#8220;The cemetery contains final resting places for several noted individuals, including Revolutionary War soldiers and officers. It is a long and storied history of this Commonwealth, and has truly become a vital &#8212; and certainly inspiring &#8212; part of this community.&#8221;</p><p>Shortly after, the group formed around the memorial honoring Lee, one of George Washington&#8217;s top spies, for a new marker dedication, presented by newly appointed regent Kathleen Smith, of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Shawnee Fort Chapter, as well as Judy Minsavage, from the Nanticoke Historical Society.</p><p>Minsavage spoke about the history of Lee, how he befriended Washington on the battle lines during the French and Indian Wars, later to become a spy for Gen. Washington at a Lancaster prison to discover how prisoners were escaping.</p><p>A direct descendant of Lee&#8217;s traveled from Connecticut to be present for the event.</p><p>Mary Ann West is a fourth-generation descendent of Lee&#8217;s who came from Westport, Connecticut, on behalf of her father, who could not make the trip.</p><p>West had the honor of officially unveiling the marker to the public, saying that her family has spent endless time searching for their entire ancestry.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really honored to be here today,&#8221; West said of the event, noting that she has been searching for Lee&#8217;s direct descendants, particularly his father. &#8220;(Lee) was truly a hero.&#8221;</p><p>Guided tours of the cemetery were available from cemetery board member and historian Jackie Keiser at two different times following the ceremony, at a cost of $5 per person, or free to veterans.</p><p>Bob Mischack, a re-enactor with the Nathan Denninson House in West Wyoming, spoke about the history of the Battle of Wyoming, and Charles Herring, a history teacher at Crestwood High School, performed a portrayal of the final survivor of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment, among other events.</p><p>Refreshments and raffle baskets were available to guests throughout the day.</p><style>
