Kick-off event highlights LCTA summer route to Frances Slocum

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; John Olowiany and his family already have their summer mapped out.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to live at this place,&#8221; Olowiany said, referring to the Kingston Community Swimming Pool. &#8220;We take care of my nephew, and he loves it here.&#8221;</p><p>The refurbished pool opened for the summer with a ribbon-cutting Thursday night, showcasing improvements that were part of $1.2 million project. Olowiany, of Edwardsville, was one of a crowd of more than 200 that got to see the pool&#8217;s new water rides and sliding boards.</p><p>On Saturday, another crowd turned out to enjoy a weekend day at the facility. The pool&#8217;s condition is a marked improvement over previous years, according to Kingston Mayor James Haggerty.</p><p>Noting that he had learned to swim at the pool, Haggerty said the facility had fallen into disrepair and forced some hard questions to be asked.</p><p>&#8220;We could have said it was a good ride or stepped up and made it better,&#8221; said Haggerty. &#8220;We chose to make it better.&#8221;</p><p>With the help of state Rep. Aaron Kaufer, R-Kingston, and state Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township, the borough acquired a grant to complete project.</p><p>&#8220;It was a grant, not a loan. You don&#8217;t have to pay it back,&#8221; a smiling Kaufer said.</p><p>Olowiany said his family has already made memories at the pool and the adjoining park and are certainly now looking forward to making more.</p><p>&#8220;Everywhere we go, people know my son, Bobby, because he&#8217;s head lifeguard here for years,&#8221; said Jacobs. &#8220;These improvements aren&#8217;t about money. They are about family.&#8221;</p><p>Kenny and Melissa Jordan &#8212; who moved to the borough in October with their children, Quincy, 6, and Cameron, 4 months &#8212; said they were impressed by the both the pool and the spirit of their new hometown.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really family oriented,&#8221; said Kenny Jordan. &#8220;And everyone is accepting of different races and cultures.&#8221;</p><p>Dave Saxon, of Kingston, said he was thoroughly enjoying the pool&#8217;s opening, calling the upgrades &#8220;a real testament to the borough in recognizing the value of having a pool.&#8221;</p><p>Kingston Councilman Robert Jacobs said the pool, originally built about 50 years ago, will now be a gift to future generations.</p><p>Haggerty said his memories of the pool include occasionally making his way into the pool at night with his friends after hours. The mayor knows those days are over, however.</p><p>&#8220;That won&#8217;t happen any more though,&#8221; he said, referring to a camera system that was installed to provide increased safety and security.</p><style>
