<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; U.S. Marshal Martin Pane said the recognition reflects the hard work and dedication by all employees, court security officers and task force members within the Middle District of Pennsylvania.</p><p>Pane was referring to an award honoring the Middle District of Pennsylvania as the &#8220;Distinguished District of the Year&#8221; by the United States Marshals Service.</p><p>The award was presented at the 35th Director&#8217;s Honorary Award Ceremony held June 22 in Arlington, Virginia. The keynote speaker was U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. David Harlow, director of the U.S. Marshals Service, presented the award.</p><p>In talking about his staff, Pane said, &#8220;Their commitment to service in protecting the court family and making our communities safer by capturing dangerous fugitives ensures all have justice. I am grateful for Director Harlow&#8217;s recognition for the men and women of this great district.&#8221;</p><p>According to information provided by the U.S. Marshals Office, the award recognizes districts whose extraordinary accomplishments have distinguished them among all others. Out of the 94 districts, three awards are presented annually to the most distinguished large, medium and small districts.</p><p>Districts are classified based upon the number of employees assigned to each &#8212; the Middle District of Pennsylvania is classified as a medium-sized district. It covers 33 of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania with offices based in Wilkees-Barre, Scranton, Harrisburg and Williamsport.</p><p>In receiving the award, the Middle District was cited for its accomplishments &#8212; some termed &#8220;historic&#8221; &#8212; such as:</p><p>&#8226; Providing invaluable support to the largest manhunt in Pennsylvania history &#8212; the search for Eric Frein &#8212; a Federal Bureau of Investigation Top Ten Fugitive wanted for killing a Pennsylvania State Police trooper and wounding another.</p><p>The district&#8217;s support directly resulted in Frein&#8217;s capture by Marshals Service personnel, helping to bring resolution to a 48-day search that terrified the region.</p><p>&#8226; The district executed the largest in-custody multi-defendant trial in its 115-year history. The 10-week trial included 12 gang members charged with the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). The case presented many security and witness vulnerabilities. Despite those challenges, a conviction of all 12 defendants occurred and the trial was executed without significant incident.</p><p>&#8226; The Marshals office in the Middle District operates a full-time fugitive task force with more than 20 state, county and local law enforcement agencies participating. Together, they brought more than 800 fugitives to justice last year, most of whom were facing charges for violent offenses.</p><p>Pane said it was &#8220;an honor&#8221; to receive the award and he &#8220;couldn&#8217;t be prouder&#8221; of the staff of the Middle District.</p><p>&#8220;This award validates the hard work performed daily throughout the district by the men and women of the Middle District,&#8221; Pane said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t be prouder of the work performed and executed day in and day out.&#8221;</p><p>Payne, a 28-year vested employee of the U.S. Marshals Office, said he has seen much positive change during his career.</p><p>He said there are some 120 employees in the Middle District that operates out of federal courthouses.</p><p>Peter Welsh, acting Clerk of Court, said despite the award being &#8220;one-time,&#8221; it is a reflection of the high regard the clerk&#8217;s office has for the Marshals Service.</p><p>&#8220;We have high regard for the Marshals Service on a daily basis,&#8221; Welsh said. &#8220;They always serve the courts with the highest professionalism. We are thrilled for them to receive this award.&#8221;</p><style>
