<p>As I entered the storefront church on Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s Public Square, filled with homeless people awaiting a fellow homeless person&#8217;s memorial service, I realized that the woman being interviewed by the press was his mother.</p><p>A homeless, alcoholic man who had done a stint in jail had a real mother. She spoke articulately, and had a loving, impressive presence. &#8220;He wasn&#8217;t a perfect person, but who of us is? He was my son. I bounced him on my knee. I have always loved him.&#8221;</p><p>She went on to say that she has forgiven the man accused of killing him. &#8220;He, also, is a person who has a mother and a father,&#8221; she stated.</p><p>I have served the homeless. I have brought them food, clothing and blankets. And, yes, I have even tried to find them a home. I have empathized with their situations, but I have never thought of them as someone&#8217;s son or daughter. I have never considered that they might have a mother who begged them to come home. I have never thought of a homeless individual as a person who responded to his mother by saying, &#8220;I am needed here more than there.&#8221;</p><p>My heart has been opened by this event. We so often feel that we know what someone else needs. But have we ever asked them?</p><p>I always have thought that homeless people needed a home, a family. But, just maybe, they have all of that, and that is not what they need. Maybe they need something else: love, understanding, compassion.
