Tunkhannock softball wins historic state title

<p>Back Mountain saw its chances for the Pennsylvania Little League Junior Baseball title end Monday with a 1-0 loss to Yough in the championship game at Cranberry Little League.</p><p>It was the second consecutive loss to Yough. Back Mountain finished the tournament at 3-2. Yough defeated Back Mountain 9-7 on Saturday and won six consecutive games after losing its opener.</p><p>Yough scored the game&#8217;s only run in the top of the sixth. Jarrett Cope singled with one out and Cole Shearer followed with a walk. Both runners moved up on a passed ball, and Cope scored on a sacrifice fly by Jarrett Bach.</p><p>Back Mountain threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Fred Lombardo doubled with one out, but Todd Phillips then lined out to the pitcher and Yough was able to double off Lombardo to end the inning.</p><p>Back Mountain also had a scoring chance in the second. Frank Nockley doubled and moved to third on Jake Connolly&#8217;s single, but they were left stranded on the corners.</p><p>Zach Holthaus also had a single for Back Mountain, which won the District 31 and Section 5 title to advance to the state tournament. Connolly took the loss, scattering six hits while throwing a complete game.</p><p>Yough, the District 9 and Section 2 champ, advances to the East Regional tournament in Freehold Township, New Jersey.</p><style>
