Police arrest West Nanticoke man wanted in connection with violent robbery

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Police have charged a city man with starting <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/local/573224/coroner-on-scene-of-structure-fire-on-prospect-street-in-wilkes-barre" target="_blank">a fire Sunday at his Prospect Street home, where first responders say they discovered a body in the bedroom</a>.</p><p>According to a police affidavit, Kyle Robert Shaw Jr. was apprehended Sunday in Rice Township after fleeing the scene of the fire, at 16 Prospect St., Wilkes-Barre, in a red minivan. Shaw, 23, is charged with two felony counts of arson and a felony count of reckless burning.</p><p>The affidavit says city police and fire personnel were dispatched to the Prospect Street address at about 6 p.m. Sunday for a report of a structure fire. The affidavit says the fire was contained to the building&#8217;s second-floor front bedroom, where emergency personnel found the body on the bed.</p><p>A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal later determined the fire had been intentionally set near the bedroom&#8217;s closet door. Police are still withholding the name of the 31-year-old victim, and officials said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.</p><p>At about 6:14 p.m., police received a call of a vehicle crash on Company Row in Wilkes-Barre Township, where the affidavit says Shaw&#8217;s ex-girlfriend lives. According to the affidavit, Shaw struck her car with the minivan before entering the house and telling her his friend had committed suicide.</p><p>Before leaving in the minivan, the affidavit says, Shaw allegedly told his ex-girlfriend he had started the fire, and threatened the home&#8217;s occupants. He reportedly struck her car with the van again as he fled.</p><p>According to the affidavit, Rice Township police stopped the minivan and arrested Shaw around 7:54 p.m. after receving a &#8220;be-on-the-lookout&#8221; warning from Wilkes-Barre police. The affidavit says the van is being processed as evidence.</p><p>During an interview at Wilkes-Barre Police Headquarters, Shaw allegedly told police he had been inside his Prospect Street residence when he found his friend dead in the bedroom, but that he couldn&#8217;t remember any other details. The affidavit says investigators observed abrasions to Shaw&#8217;s forehead.</p><p>According to the affidavit, a witness told investigators they had seen a man with abrasions on his forehead fleeing the home moments after smoke was observed.</p><p>Court records show Shaw, also known as &#8220;Bam,&#8221; served a little over a year in county prison for holding a spring-loaded knife to a man&#8217;s throat during a 2010 robbery in which Shaw and another man made away with $63.</p><p>The criminal complaint says Shaw warned the victim not to tell anyone about the robbery or he &#8220;would find him and slit his throat.&#8221;</p><p>Shaw allegedly again threatened to kill a few years later.</p><p>Maggie Emily Anne May said Shaw threatened to blow her car up and kill her after she broke up with him last year, the city woman wrote in an October 2015 temporary protection-from-abuse order.</p><p>&#8220;He also stated when he kills himself I will have a whole page in his (suicide) note,&#8221; May wrote in the order, which was granted in November by a judge and expires later this year.</p><p>Shaw was arraigned Monday morning before Magisterial District Judge James Tupper and lodged in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $200,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 16.</p><style>
