Olympic sports get a boost locally thanks to Games in Rio

<p>A bad outing by Crestwood graduate Matt Wotherspoon has been put in the past while pitching for the Trenton Thunder (Double-A Yankees).</p><p>The right-hander tossed two scoreless frames against Richmond last week while striking out three and giving up just one hit.</p><p>Since giving up three runs in just 1 1/3 innings against Portland on July 18, the 24-year-old has surrendered just two runs over his last 9 1/3 innings, while also fanning 15 batters in that time.</p><p>Wotherspoon has made 30 combined appearances this season with the Thunder and RailRiders and has an ERA of 2.86.</p><p>He has a 5-2 record and is averaging more than a strikeout per inning with 73 in 72 1/3 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .205 batting average.</p><p><strong>Mike Papi</strong></p><p>A rare occurrence in a baseball game happened to the Tunkhannock alum last weekend when Papi was waiting to get out to the on-deck circle. In the game against Portland last Saturday, Papi was hit by a foul ball in the leg and had to leave the game after just one at bat.</p><p>After two days off, Papi returned to the Akron RubberDucks (Cleveland Indians Double-A) lineup and collected his first career three-hit game in Double-A going 3 for 4. It was his third three-hit game of the season as he had two with High-A Lynchburg, one in April and one in May.</p><p>For the season, between Double-A and Single-A Papi holds a .218 batting average with nine homers and a .347 batting average. Papi has driven in 43 runs and also scored 43.</p><p><strong>Tony Hernandez</strong></p><p>The 2016 draft pick in the 15th round by the Yankees and the Hazleton Area alum was hit hard in his outing last week for the the Gulf Coast League Yankees West.</p><p>The 19-year-old lefty allowed five runs on eight hits lasting just 3 2/3 innings in his first start in three weeks and was hit with a loss.</p><p>For the season, he has a 2-2 record with a 4.35 ERA which has rose by more than runs during his last appearance. Prior to that outing, he had allowed just five earned runs in 17 innings pitched.</p><p><strong>Ray Black</strong></p><p>The right-hander was placed back on the disabled list last week with soreness in his elbow. The Coughlin grad had just been off the DL for a little more than a week recovering from an elbow issue.</p><p>The 26-year-old playing for the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants) has a 1-4 record and six saves in seven chances and has fanned 53 batters in 31 1/3 innings. He&#8217;s ERA, which is currently 4.88, has been lowered by more than three runs during a recent hot stretch.</p><style>
