Our Opinion: Curb growth of infants cursed by mothers’ addictions

<p>When the state legislature returned to session, one of the first measures our senators were set to take up is House Bill 1948, which would give Pennsylvania one of most restrictive abortion bans in the nation. The House already approved the bill, fast-tracking it earlier this spring without any public hearings. The Senate is doing the same.</p><p>The legislation would criminalize the safest medical procedure for second trimester abortions &#8212;- stripping doctors of their ability to make medical decisions &#8212;- and impose a 20-week abortion ban in the commonwealth, eliminating access to safe and legal abortion later in pregnancy even in the cases of rape and incest.</p><p>This bill does nothing to protect women but rather puts them at risk and interferes with access to basic health care. Even as legislators are pushing an abortion ban under the guise of &#8220;women&#8217;s health,&#8221; they have bottled up a bill that would ensure reasonable accommodations are made for pregnant women in the workplace. The hypocrisy is appalling.</p><p>The reason this bill is moving so fast with so little public discussion is because legislators simply don&#8217;t want you to know what they&#8217;re up to.
