Area legislators push for solutions to opioid addiction

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A New York man pleaded guilty Wednesday to shooting a woman in the back.</p><p>Police said Anthony Santiago, 31, of Staten Island, New York, shot Rachel Torres when she attempted to intervene and help her boyfriend, Jezmeric Zenon, who was being robbed inside 293 Grove St. on Sept. 22, 2015. Torres survived a gunshot wound to her back.</p><p>After the shooting, police from several West Side departments, as well as state police, canvassed the neighborhood, finding a red sweatshirt in a cemetery dumpster. A canine was used to track the sweatshirt&#8217;s scent and, after taking statements from witnesses, authorities arrested the four men at an apartment at the Hilltop Apartment complex in Edwardsville three hours after the shooting.</p><p>Zenon allegedly told police he received a phone call from a man identified as &#8220;Easy,&#8221; asking if he was home. A short time later, Zenon claimed two men forced their way inside through a rear door and forced him to the floor at gunpoint, according to the criminal complaints. Torres exited a bedroom and retrieved a handgun.</p><p>When Torres was seen holding a gun, Santiago turned and fired two or three rounds at her, the complaints say.</p><p>Codefendants Nathaniel Moore, 30, of New York, and Rasheed Fields, 38, of Wilkes-Barre, each pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in the case, records show. A third co-defendant, 27-year-old Darnell Jackson, of Wilkes-Barre, awaits trial on the charges.</p><p>Santiago&#8217;s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 22.</p><style>
