WVC Football: Hazleton Area’s effort not enough in loss to Scranton

WRIGHT TWP. &#8212; Out of all of Crestwood&#8217;s huge nights on offense in recent years, Greg Myers had never seen something quite like this.The Comets coach had no timeouts when he got the ball at his own 21 in the final minute of the first half on Friday against Tunkhannock. Crestwood already had a four-touchdown lead, but with a team that hadn&#8217;t won since August, Myers badly wanted to give his players a boost.Four runs later and with no time left on the clock, Pat Rother was in the end zone with a 21-yard score. That moment in the Comets&#8217; 49-6 win is one Myers hopes will stick with them as they make a push for the playoffs.&#8220;That was important for us,&#8221; Myers said. &#8220;You&#8217;ve gotta consider the way our season&#8217;s been going. And I needed to send a message to our team that we&#8217;re a good football team. And they need to believe that.&#8220;I think that was what we needed there for the confidence level. &#8230; We just needed that as a team.&#8221;Crestwood had narrowly pulled out its season opener before proceeding to drop five straight. Top athlete Lance Blass was injured during that stretch and sophomore Chase Passman took over at quarterback.&#8220;(The past few weeks) were hard, but it&#8217;s for experience,&#8221; Passman said. &#8220;And I think I&#8217;m ready to go. I&#8217;ve got it down.&#8221;It sure looked like it against the Tigers.Blass made his return last night and was eased back into the action while Passman remained under center, rushing for 129 yards and four touchdowns on just six carries. He was one of three Comets to top 100 yards along with Rother (137, two TDs) and Mike Macri (107, one TD).&#8220;Chase is a special kid,&#8221; Myers said. &#8220;We see that in him and that&#8217;s why we&#8217;re sticking with him as our quarterback even when Lance is back at full speed.&#8220;He had a great night. He needed this night after the last couple weeks he&#8217;s had. But he did good things. He&#8217;s got the respect of his teammates. &#8230; He&#8217;s only going to get better as the season goes on.&#8221;As for Blass, he threw a 36-yard pass after a pitch back from Passman on the Comets&#8217; opening drive to set up their first touchdown. He also ran seven times for 24 yards.Moving forward, having both Passman and Blass on the field at the same time should pay off for the Comets (2-5).&#8220;It&#8217;s gonna open things up a lot for us offensively,&#8221; Myers said. &#8220;To use Lance at a couple different positions now &#8212; you saw him at receiver, you saw him in the slot, you saw him in the backfield &#8212; that&#8217;s going to be our plan from here on out.&#8220;Really, that&#8217;s where Lance belongs any way. He just happened to be the best athlete at the time and we wanted the ball in his hands every snap.&#8221;Myers said Blass&#8217; impact was significant on defense as a leader. Certainly Crestwood responded with him back in, shutting out the Tigers (2-5) until the final minutes with backups in on both sides.Crestwood did an excellent job bottling up Tigers standout Logan Cywinski, who entered the night as the WVC&#8217;s third leading rusher at 789 yards (6.1 ypc) and 13 touchdowns. On Friday, he finished with just 12 yards on 20 carries.It added up to a big shot in the arm for the Comets, who take momentum into the final three weeks, hoping to crack into the eight-team District 2 Class 4A playoff field.&#8220;It&#8217;s finally fun to win a game,&#8221; Passman said. &#8220;Just proud of my team. Defense, offense, special teams.&#8220;We&#8217;re going to Week 11.
