Plymouth to permit fire pits

<p>DURYEA &#8212; A newly paved railroad crossing in Duryea is causing some issues for residents who live near or travel around Foote Avenue near the Germania Hose Company.</p><p>The Duryea Borough Council approved the installation of two mirrors at the corners of Railroad Street and Foote Avenue, and at the corner of Dehaba Street and Foote Avenue, to help alleviate traffic issues. Prior to the paving of the railroad crossing, cars were forced to slow down on the 35 mph road.</p><p>Residents voiced their concerns on the issue during the public input portion of Tuesday&#8217;s work session, which was followed by a public meeting. Bebe Yuhas, of 511 Foote Avenue, lives three houses from the railroad tracks.</p><p>&#8220;The railroad tracks are beautiful, but now it&#8217;s like a race track,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When I&#8217;m pulling out of my driveway people don&#8217;t know I&#8217;m pulling out. &#8220;</p><p>Yuhas won&#8217;t be able to see the mirrors that will be installed on two telephone poles perpendicular to the two streets and Foote Avenue. However, she believes it will decrease issues for travelers coming from Railroad Street and Dehaba Street. She said she now goes up the street farther if she is looking to pull out on Foote Avenue.</p><p>&#8220;It will help those coming out of Railroad Street and Dehaba Street,&#8221; Yuhas said. &#8220;No one should have to worry about a bad accident, and I hope it&#8217;s not me.&#8221;</p><p>Council President Ed Ameika said travelers were struggling to see traffic on Foote Avenue when exiting the two streets following the repaving of the railroad tracks. While the easiest thing might be to change the speed limit, he said it&#8217;s a state road and that would be up to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.</p><p>In the past, council has voted to install such mirrors throughout the borough. One instance was on Marcy Street where Ameika said it has been a success. In 2010, the borough installed a mirror to improve visibility exiting from Swetland Street onto Main Street.</p><p>Prior the meeting, Mayor Keith Moss presented a pair of Heroism Awards to Duryea police officers. Officers George Brazdzionis and Charles Swisher responded to a call of an overdose within the borough. Before paramedics could arrive, Brazdzionis and Swisher performed CPR to revive the patient until emergency personnel arrived.</p><p>In other business:</p><p>&#8226; Council approved a $23,390.70 resurfacing project for the courts at the Duryea Community Park through the COSTARS program. COSTARS is Pennsylvania&#8217;s Cooperative Purchasing Program. The park will also receive a $2,400 paving upgrade by Fortini Blacktopping.</p><p>&#8226; The following part-time police officers were appointed for the month of November, as needed for the general welfare, health and safety to the public: Brian Russo, Thomas Walsh, Patrick Zippittelli, Jeremy Jones, Brianne Dunn, Michael Morrison, Matthew Fredmonski, Jason Berry and Tywone Giles.</p><p>&#8226; Council moved to donate $100 to the Pittston Area Baseball Booster Club.</p><style>
