Letter to the Editor: Exercise your right to vote on Nov. 8; it’s a critical election

<p>&#8220;I chose that old African proverb to title this book because it offers a timeless reminder that children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them.&#8221;</p><p>&#8212; Hillary Rodham Clinton, &#8220;It Takes a Village&#8221;</p><p>Here are some facts about this woman who, in her early life, began to champion the needs of children, moving on to include women, workers, minorities and the disabled. She continues to work for equal rights around the world.</p><p>Born in Chicago to a working-class family, she watched over her two younger brothers, then went on to baby-sit for others, while active in school and church activities. On summer mornings she supervised children at the park. She cared for the children of migrant farmworkers.</p><p>Her parents were conservative Republicans. She actively campaigned for Richard Nixon, even reporting voting fraud when she found empty lots where homes of registered voters should have been. Hillary was all of 13.</p><p>She attended Wellesley College, still working her way up, this time tutoring. After Yale Law School, Hillary worked at the Children&#8217;s Defense Fund, knocking on doors to collect data about the quality of care at home.</p><p>She married Bill Clinton, whom she had met at Yale. As first lady of Arkansas, she headed up the Arkansas Education Standards Committee and co-founded Advocates for Children. In 1980, while pregnant with Chelsea, she was a fundraiser and board member for the only children&#8217;s hospital in Arkansas, flying to New York to secure a bond-rating good enough to borrow money. </p><p>In 1985, Hillary started a pre-school program that took off and spread nationally, helping more than 15,000 families get early education for their kids.</p><p>As first lady of our nation, she helped pass the Children&#8217;s Health Insurance Program, affording 8 million children health coverage. </p><p>Now imagine you are a child again.
