Letter to the Editor: The people want a Donald Trump presidency, despite party’s reluctance

<p>I smoked cigarettes for decades. I knew it was bad for me, but quitting was incredibly difficult.</p><p>Over the years I had tried and failed to quit many times. Finally, I successfully quit, largely because I could replace tobacco cigarettes with potentially harm-reducing alternative e-vapor products.</p><p>Important legislation has passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support: the Cole-Bishop Amendment to the House Agriculture appropriations bill.</p><p>This amendment expands on the Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s rule for newly regulated e-vapor products to improve consumer safety. This amendment also updates the &#8220;predicate date&#8221; for newly deemed tobacco products, a step needed to preserve innovation and to keep existing products on the marketplace without unnecessarily subjecting them to burdensome FDA reviews.</p><p>In doing so, the amendment will ensure consumers like me, who have benefited from safer alternatives to traditional products, will not have their choices limited.</p><p>These updates are needed, and I urge my U.S. senators, Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, to act swiftly to support this important legislation in the Senate.</p><p><strong>Alan J.
