Season ends for Nanticoke girls volleyball in a PIAA tournament sweep

<p>LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; By the time Dallas&#8217; offense finally got moving Tuesday night, it was too late. Daniel Boone had done just enough damage to end the Mountaineers&#8217; season.</p><p>And the damage came from an expected source as Jamie Burns, Daniel Boone&#8217;s leading scorer, found the net twice in the first half and the Blazers held off Dallas for a 2-1 victory in a PIAA Class 3A boys soccer first-round game at Lake-Lehman High School.</p><p>District 2 champion Dallas ended its season at 14-4-1. District 3 third seed Daniel Boone (14-8) advanced to Saturday&#8217;s quarterfinals and play D1 champion Northwestern Lehigh, which defeated D4 champ 1-0.</p><p>Longtime Dallas coach Chris Scharff dissected the game into three parts and he was pretty spot on with his assessment.</p><p>Segment One: Dallas missed a couple early opportunities. Zack Kalna made a strong run through the right side of the penalty area, only to overrun the ball slightly. As he tried to recover, he and Daniel Boone keeper Stephen Williams collided. The contact sent Williams to the bench for a few minutes. A few minutes later, Dallas&#8217; Kade Kravits had a 30-yard direct kick sail just over the crossbar.</p><p>&#8220;If we would have got that first goal, we would have been like all over it,&#8221; Scharff said.</p><p>Segment Two: Daniel Boone dominated the final 30 minutes of the first half, using its speed and quick, accurate passing to keep the Dallas defense on its toes and preventing much of a Mountaineer counter attack. Burns then lined in a 25-yard direct kick midway through the first 40 minutes and followed by banging in a short shot from a long ground pass with eight minutes until halftime.</p><p>&#8220;The direct kick wasn&#8217;t a big deal,&#8221; Scharff said. &#8220;We fouled and he had a great direct kick. My goalkeeper, their goalkeeper, most goalkeepers wouldn&#8217;t have stopped it. &#8230;. The second goal I was unhappy with. I wanted to hold it 1-0 because I knew we would come out with a new mindset in the second half because we usually do.&#8221;</p><p>Segment Three: Dallas changed its alignment in the second half and it nearly paid off. The Mountaineers went with a fifth defender to neutralize Burns, who came into the game with 26 of the Blazers&#8217; 59 goals. They upped their attackers from two to three.</p><p>&#8220;I said to the guy, &#8216;If they don&#8217;t score again, we have a good chance of winning,&#8217;&#8221; Scharff said. &#8220;If we give a fourth, we&#8217;re not going to win. If we give a third. it&#8217;s going to be very difficult.&#8221;</p><p>The strategy left the midfield lean, but worked when Nate Maransky followed up his chip over Williams, the Daniel Boone keeper, to score with 21 minutes left. The Mountaineers, though, couldn&#8217;t get the equalizer despite having nine of their 13 shots in the second half.</p><p>&#8220;I thought we got a little too comfortable when we came out in the second half,&#8221; Daniel Boone coach Matt Kade said. &#8220;We kind of took our foot off the pedal and that was kind of something we stressed (not to do) after halftime.
