EXETER TWP. &#8212; For a whole season, they sat and stewed.The returning players from Crestwood&#8217;s difficult state semifinal field hockey loss could only watch and wonder if the team that eventually captured the PIAA championship somehow stole something that should have been theirs.Maybe now it can be.Mackenzie Kile scored one goal and set up another, Jordan Olenginski nailed the winner and Marlee Dillon was marvelous in the cage Tuesday as Crestwood gained a double-dose of revenge. The Comets knocked defending Class 2A state champion Twin Valley from the 2016 state tournament with a determined 2-1 opening-round victory at Exeter Township High School.&#8220;It&#8217;s a great accomplishment to beat the defending state champs,&#8221; Olenginski said with a smile.Especially when it&#8217;s the team that ended Crestwood&#8217;s own state dream a year ago.It took overtime, but Twin Valley upended an unbeaten Crestwood team, 3-2, in last season&#8217;s state semifinal round before advancing to win the PIAA Class 2A title.And although many players have changed on both teams since that game, the Comets who came back &#8212; including Kile, Olenginski and Dillon &#8212; couldn&#8217;t help but remember it.&#8220;It kind of gave us more motivation to win, because they beat us last year in overtime,&#8221; said Olenginski, who will lead the 15-5-1 District 2 runner-up Comets into Saturday&#8217;s state quarterfinals against District 1 No. 4 seed West Chester East, a 4-3 winner over Southern Lehigh on Tuesday.That extra oomph Crestwood was carrying showed from the start, when Kile was awarded a penalty stroke and angrily smoked the game&#8217;s first goal into the right corner of the cage.&#8220;Last year&#8217;s loss was really tough,&#8221; said Dillon, Crestwood&#8217;s returning starting netminder. &#8220;We had a really strong team. We were primed to go all the way. It was really surprising we lost.&#8221;Not this time.Dillon was spectacular in making eight saves on the day, starting with two straight from point-blank range six-and-a-half minutes into the evening.Late in the game she was even better.With just over five minutes to play, Dillon kicked away a Twin Valley opportunity on a dangerous penalty corner play, then came back with two consecutive tough saves to thwart the Raiders on another penalty corner surge.&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t nervous,&#8221; Dillon said. &#8220;I was super-motivated. There was very little time left. I just wanted to keep it out.&#8221;She certainly had help.Late in the first half, Dillon made a diving save, and when Twin Valley came up with the rebound, Kile flashed in front to protect the cage by swatting away a waist-high shot.&#8220;Mackenzie came up big in a couple of places,&#8221; Crestwood coach Patsy Moratori said, &#8220;where she just seemed to come out of nowhere.&#8221;All eyes were on her for the penalty stroke, and she easily put it away to give Crestwood an early advantage.But Twin Valley tied it later in the first half, when Riley Knapp slipped one past the side of Dillon to even things up.Unfazed, Dillon didn&#8217;t allow another score for the rest of the game.&#8220;I have a lot of responsibility back there,&#8221; Dillon said. &#8220;If I get nervous, we could fall apart.&#8221;Then, Crestwood used a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play to pick Twin Valley&#8217;s defense apart.Kile tipped the final pass to Olenginski, who scalded what proved to be the winning goal into the right side of the cage to give Crestwood a 2-1 lead 3:59 from halftime &#8212; which set the final score.&#8220;Mackenzie had it on the side, she just had a little tip to me,&#8221; Olenginski said. &#8220;I pulled and saw the corner and shot. I&#8217;ve played with Mackenzie for a long time, we communicate very well. I tried my hardest to shoot for the corner, because I get so frustrated when I shoot for the middle and it gets blocked.&#8221;No blocking Crestwood just yet, as the defending state champion discovered in a PIAA opener.&#8220;I think on both ends, we really put a good game together,&#8221; Moratori said. &#8220;I thought this game we had a lot of double-teams, where if someone misses, someone else helped to take it. It should do a lot for our confidence.&#8221;And just maybe, it could wind up helping Crestwood recover the one that got away.&#8220;Oh, we&#8217;re going to be state champs,&#8221; Olenginski said. &#8220;After losing the District (2) game, everybody was kind of down.
