Our Opinion: Area’s topflight teachers merit more time in limelight

SHICKSHINNY&#8212; The borough council Thurday night took action to appoint Councilwoman Kathleen Llewellyn to serve on the Shickshinny Area Sewer Authority and to hire Daniel Thomas, of West Wyoming, to serve as part-time police officer.All three council members present &#8212; Chairman Kevin Morris, James Wido and Chris Madl &#8212; voted for the appointments.Mayor Beverly Moore said Thomas, pending a background check, will serve 20 hours per week at a rate of $12 per hour. He will join officer Connor Hedrick in what is now a two-man department.Council also took action on ordinances that create no parking areas on West Union Street at the intersection of Bartoli&#8217;s Lane, re-establish two-lane traffic on Bartoli&#8217;s Lane and imposed regulations on the erection of telecommunication towers.In conjunction with an update on the streetscape project, the council approved payments of $365,000 and $16,000 to Don E. Bower Construction, the primary contractor for the project.In other matters:&#8226; Council OK&#8217;d a $25,000 loan proposal by 1st Keystone Community Bank for the purchase of a 2017 F550 pickup truck.&#8226; Council approved a $3,000 donation to the Shickshinny Fire Company to help offset insurance premium costs.&#8226; Council decided that a public meeting will be scheduled at 6 p.m. on Nov. 22 &#8212; in conjunction with a work session &#8212; in order to enact the 2017 budget.<div class="metaInfo"><bylineMeta>By Tom HuntingtonFor Times Leader</bylineMeta></div><div class="metaInfo"><shirttailMeta>Reach the Times Leader newsroom at 570-829-7242 or on Twitter @TLnews.</shirttailMeta></div>
