GAR can’t slow down Scranton Prep in Class 3A championship loss

WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; In a battle of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference on Friday, one dominated and the other fell flat.The first place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins turned in a lackluster effort against a Toronto Marlies team that used its speed and size to earn a 3-0 win. The game marked the second time the Penguins (8-2-1-0) were shut out this season and snapped a four-game winning streak. The loss was also just the second defeat in regulation this season for the Penguins.&#8220;I thought we were off,&#8221; Penguins coach Clark Donatelli said. &#8220;They&#8217;re a big, strong team, and they make you pay when you make mistakes.&#8221;Toronto came out flying to start the game, and the Penguins played catch-up for the rest of the night.Kerby Rychel put the Marlies on the board with two goals &#8212; his first two of the season &#8212; in the first period to put the Penguins down 2-0.After being outshot 13-6 in the first period, the Penguins picked up the pace. But it was the Marlies who extended their lead. Frederik Gauthier shot the puck as Tristan Jarry tried to get into position but got tangled up with Tim Erixon in front. As Jarry worked to get back in the crease, the puck bounced behind him and in to give Toronto a 3-0 lead.At the other end, the Penguins struggled to generate offense consistently.&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it was really enough. We were looking for the pretty plays and we didn&#8217;t get any gritty chances in front of the net,&#8221; captain Tom Kostopoulos said.To his credit, Jarry made several outstanding saves to limit the damage, including a diving stick-stop on Gauthier, who threw the puck in front from behind the net.Donatelli called Jarry, who stopped 32-of-35 shots, the lone bright spot of the game.&#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t for Jarry, it could&#8217;ve been a lot worse,&#8221; Kostopoulos said. &#8220;They were all over us.&#8221;The Penguins&#8217; best opportunity of the night came late in the second period when they were shorthanded. Josh Archibald stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on a breakaway, only to have his shot stopped by Toronto netminder Antoine Bibeau.At the end of two periods, the Penguins were outshot 27-11, but it still felt like Toronto&#8217;s 3-0 lead was one they could chip away.&#8220;You never know what can happen,&#8221; Kostopoulos said. &#8220;We wanted to try and get one on the board and maybe get a power play, but we couldn&#8217;t get a whole lot going.&#8221;Any chance of a comeback faded late in the third period when the Penguins got into more penalty trouble and gave Toronto a two-man advantage for 1:37 with just over two minutes left in the game.When the Penguins were last shut out on Oct. 21, it was also at the beginning of a three-in-three. They went on to win the next two.With games Saturday and Sunday, the Penguins will hope to repeat that effort.&#8220;We have to be more disciplined. We have to play faster, finish checks and execute our first pass,&#8221; Donatelli said. &#8220;We have to be better all around.&#8221;NOTES&#8226; F Thomas Di Pauli returned from a lower-body injury to play in his first pro game on Friday.&#8220;He was solid. He got his feet wet out there,&#8221; Donatelli said. &#8220;He&#8217;s not in game shape yet, but he&#8217;ll get better as it goes along.&#8221;&#8226; D Ethan Prow, RW Patrick McGrath, D Lukas Bengtsson, RW Ryan Haggerty (injury) and D Barry Goers were scratched for the Penguins.<style>
