<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A new training program aims to help young people enter, or re-enter, the workforce with experience and confidence.</p><p>The Northeast Pennsylvania Pre-Apprenticeship Training program, sponsored by PA CareerLink, will provide training for building trades and the manufacturing industry to young adults between 18 and 24.</p><p>&#8220;Many of our local employers are recruiting for new employees with particular skills that are becoming harder to find, this program will teach additional skills that are required to be successful in today&#8217;s work environments,&#8221; said Christine Jensen, who oversees the program at CareerLink.</p><p>Jensen said she hopes to fill all 50 spots available in the 130-hour program.</p><p>&#8220;With such a need for this type of training, I hope that not one seat is vacant,&#8221; she said.</p><p>The program is underwritten by several organizations including the PA Department of Labor and Industry, The Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board, Inc. in partnership with the Lackawanna Workforce Board and Northern Tier Workforce Board.</p><p>It includes four specific components: Math for the trades, basic construction, work readiness and instruction in safety, with participants receiving two additional certifications in forklift and flagger.</p><p>Nicole Wiesner, case manager at Volunteers of American&#8217;s Manna House, said the program will fill a void often faced by young adults trying to make their way into the workplace or back into the workplace.</p><p>Manna House serves young adults between 18 and 25 who have previously been homeless.</p><p>A key component of their success, Wiesner said, is access to training and familiarity with the workplace environment.</p><p>Part of her job is to seek out resources to increase skills, find jobs and increase income for program participants.</p><p>The internship program at CareerLink, she said, will provide opportunity for young people to do just that.</p><p>Classes in the Wilkes-Barre area will begin Feb. 1 at the Wilkes-Barre Career &amp; Technology Center.</p><p>Those interested are asked to contact Christine Jensen at 570-822-1101, ex. 3057 or by email at christinejensen@lswib.</p><style>
