<p>Many people associate a wet basement with seeing water, but that&#8217;s not the only symptom of a potential problem, according to Wes Pfleiger, marketing manager at Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing.</p><p>In addition to water seepage, loose or crumbling mortar between stones and plaster, mold and mildew, musty odors and cracks or dark spots in basement walls and floors can all be signs of a basement with a water problem.</p><p>Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing is primed to educate consumers as a vendor at the Northeastern PA Home and Better Living Show April 8 and 9 at the Lodge at Montage, 1000 Montage Mountain Road in Scranton.</p><p>The event is presented by the Home Builders Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania and sponsored by Scranton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, Window World and Bath Fitter/Kitchen Saver.</p><p>Pfleiger said trained professionals from the 52-year-old company will be on hand at the event to answer &#8220;any and all questions&#8221; about basement waterproofing. Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing will also offer free, no-obligation basement inspections for home show visitors.</p><p>The key to avoiding a bigger problem is noticing those early warning signs of a wet basement and seeking help before problems get worse.</p><p>&#8220;Wet basement issues are progressive and aggressive, so more often than not they do not stay the same forever,&#8221; said Pfleiger. &#8220;Time will take its toll on any home as the home gets older &#8230; and putting off service will simply lead to a more expensive fix potentially. There could also be structural issues with the foundation. Water is the most destructive element, make no qualms about it.&#8221;</p><p>In addition to these issues, a wet basement can produce mold, which, depending on the situation, can turn into a health hazard.</p><p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t try to scare people, but some people are allergic to different types of mold, and different people are sensitive to mold,&#8221; said Pfleiger. &#8220;It&#8217;s definitely a potential health hazard.&#8221;</p><p>The services offered by Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing are backed by a transferable lifetime guarantee, with no need for any kind of maintenance so, Pfleiger acknowledges, in many cases, first-time customers are also last-time customers.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve touched a lot of areas and people, and at the home shows we work at, it&#8217;s great to hear from people, &#8216;You fixed my basement 1, 10, 15, 20 years ago,&#8217;&#8221; said Pfleiger.</p><p>Pfleiger said a recent project included waterproofing at the Statue of Liberty when a crew from Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing was asked to waterproof an administration office at the base of the iconic statue on Liberty Island in New York.</p><style>
