Seeing water is not the only wet basement warning sign

<p>When it comes to generators, not all products and services are created equal.</p><p>That&#8217;s what Ben Rinker of Rinker Generator wants the public to know. A licensed electrician for over 30 years, Rinker started the generator division of his business about 10 years ago when he noticed the market was lacking in automatic generators.</p><p>&#8220;Now they are more and more in demand,&#8221; said Rinker.</p><p>Rinker is one of more than 40 vendors to appear at the Northeastern PA Home and Better Living Show April 8 and 9 at the Lodge at Montage, 1000 Montage Mountain Road in Scranton.</p><p>The event is presented by the Home Builders Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania and sponsored by Scranton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, Window World and Bath Fitter/Kitchen Saver.</p><p>The difference between the generator sitting on the shelf at the local home improvement store and what Rinker offers is stark, and what customers don&#8217;t know about the proper use of the machine could potentially lead to a life or death situation.</p><p>&#8220;If you plop a generator next to your house, there are 10 different things you could do wrong. It&#8217;s dangerous,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And it&#8217;s something that can kill you, with carbon monoxide and gas leaks.&#8221;</p><p>Rinker specializes in automatic generators, permanent structures that automatically turn on in the event of a power outage. Rinker said they differ from store-bought models in that they are virtually an after-thought for homeowners during a storm situation.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a permanent structure connected to the house, and within 20 seconds it starts (when the power goes out),&#8221; he said. &#8220;The generator runs as long as it needs to run and it shuts off automatically. Whether you&#8217;re home or not home, it does its job, and you don&#8217;t have to worry. There&#8217;s nothing you have to do.&#8221;</p><p>Rinker also said piece of mind is part of the price. The average project costs a homeowner between $6,000 and $6,500, which includes the generator, a concrete pad to place it on, delivery, installation, permits, and other factors the homeowner may not always consider when making a generator decision.</p><p>&#8220;The biggest thing is that, in reality, people think (a generator) can be installed and done for $3,000, and that&#8217;s where people make their mistake,&#8221; said Rinker.</p><p>He said it pays to have the job done right and, with that, comes a six-year warranty to give homeowners even less to worry about. In addition to installing the machines, Rinker Generator performs service calls. He recommends getting a generator serviced annually for maintenance purposes.</p><p>&#8220;Our motto is quality at a fair price,&#8221; said Rinker.</p><style>
