<p>SCRANTON &#8212; The woman who collapsed at the finish line of the Scranton Half Marathon on Sunday died from a type of hemorrhage &#8220;no more common in runners than the general population,&#8221; explained a local physician.</p><p>Lindsay Doherty, 36, of Scranton, died in the emergency room of Geisinger Community Medical Center after medical personnel started CPR on her at the finish line.</p><p>Authorities say she died from an intra-abdominal hemorrhage.</p><p>&#8220;Runners can experience abdominal pain and there is evidence that blood flow to the gut is reduced during exercise, but this is not associated with bleeding,&#8221; Dr. Anthony Valente, senior medical director at Lehigh Valley Hospital &#8212; Hazleton, said in an email.</p><p>Valente described an intra-abdominal hemorrhage as &#8220;bleeding into the abdominal cavity from organ or blood vessel rupture.&#8221; Most young people suffer such a hemorrhage through trauma.</p><p><a href="http://www.telegram.com/news/20170403/former-holden-woman-36-dies-after-half-marathon" target="_blank">The Worcester (Mass.) Telegram</a> said Doherty graduated from Wachusett Regional High School, in Holden, Mass., in 1998, was part of the school&#8217;s track team and went on to attend the College of the Holy Cross, graduating with a degree in English.</p><p>Bill Genello, executive director of communications for the Diocese of Scranton, said Doherty was a diocesan employee in charge of two programs &#8212; one which provides tuition assistance to students attending diocesan schools and the other which provides scholarship assistance to eligible families who reside within the boundaries of an under-performing school.</p><p>&#8220;Lindsay was a bright, energetic young woman and a devoted wife and mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, three young children, her parents, and her family,&#8221; Bishop Joseph Bambera said in an email Sunday.</p><p>The committee for the marathon released a statement, calling the situation &#8220;tragic.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;While we painstakingly prepare in advance for situations like this, we are saddened when an actual emergency occurs and the outcome is not favorable,&#8221; the statement said.</p><p>The Scranton Half Marathon&#8217;s Facebook page says race organizers have started a memorial fund for Doherty&#8217;s family.</p><p>Contributions can be made to the Lindsay O&#8217;Rourke Doherty Memorial Fund, PNC Bank, P.O.
