Steamtown offers fun look at railroad history on fee-free Easter weekend

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; It was getting down to the wire for Easter-related fun, and one local group waited until the day before the holiday to hold a favorite children&#8217;s event.</p><p>The Kiwanis Club of Kingston held its 11th annual egg hunt Saturday at Church Street Park in Kingston, and, according to club President Jaclyn Rudeski, 28, of Hanover Township, it was one of the biggest years for attendance.</p><p>&#8220;We had about 90 kids RSVP,&#8221; Rudeski said. &#8220;And we had some decide to come as they drove by and saw what was happening.&#8221;</p><p>Rudeski said the growth in attendance is likely due to her advertising the event with a Facebook event page, whereas in the past, invitations were only sent to local schools and local daycares.</p><p>Plastic eggs were scattered around the playground area, with some eggs containing slips of paper, letting the kids know that they had won a larger prize, such as a full-sized Easter basket. These prizes were donated mostly by members of the Kiwanis Club. Rudeski also said that some donations were made by the local Girl Scouts.</p><p>&#8220;Most of the baskets focus around outdoor toys,&#8221; Rudeski said. &#8220;It&#8217;s good to get kids into action.&#8221;</p><p>While not all children were lucky enough to win one of the larger prizes, the Kiwanis Club made sure to have a goodie bag filled with treats on hand for everyone who participated in the egg hunt.</p><p>Rudeski said that most of the Kiwanis Club&#8217;s activities are to benefit local children, with other fundraising activities being used to fund the egg hunt, the club&#8217;s longest-running event.</p><p>&#8220;Families love it because it&#8217;s free, and it&#8217;s a nice family thing to do,&#8221; Rudeski said. &#8220;And it&#8217;s worth it because the kids get excited.&#8221;</p><p>And with plenty of treats and even a visit from the Easter Bunny himself, the kids had plenty to be excited about.</p><p>Robin Field, 40, of Kingston, brought her 7-year-old son, Sam, to look for some eggs. She said that they were enjoying the beautiful weather and the sense of community.</p><p>&#8220;The Kiwanis Club is so generous,&#8221; Field said. &#8220;And it&#8217;s great to see the kids lined up for the egg hunt, quivering with excitement.&#8221;</p><p>Amy Feldman, 35, of Shavertown, was out with her son, 3-year-old Camdon, and she echoed Field&#8217;s statements on the success of the event, while Camdon ran around excitedly.</p><p>&#8220;I liked how they broke it up into age groups. I think it was very well-run,&#8221; Feldman said. &#8220;It&#8217;s always good to come out and show support for the community.&#8221;</p><style>
