Grant awarded to Parent Child Home Program

<p>LAFLIN, LUZERNE COUNTY &#8212; A rock, mineral and gem show brought in hundreds of people for the event&#8217;s second and final day on Sunday afternoon.</p><p>Members of the Mineralogical Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania said this is the 14th year for the show, which was held at the St. Joseph&#8217;s Oblates Seminary in Laflin.</p><p>Organizers say about 20 dealers showed up and the show typically brings in about 1,000 people.</p><p>After more than 40 years of studying minerals, MSNEPA past president Joe Savokinas of Pittston is still fascinated by nature&#8217;s beauty.</p><p>&#8220;Sometimes you&#8217;ll dig in and open up a rock, and there&#8217;s crystals inside and you&#8217;re the first person in the world to ever see them,&#8221; says Savokinas. &#8220;How many people could say that they saw something that no one in the world ever saw before?&#8221;</p><p>Savokinas says while Northeast PA is rich with fossils and coal, there are few minerals occurring naturally. However, you can find them in southern Pennsylvania.</p><p>The show is held every year on the first weekend in May. The Mineralogical Society meets on the 4th Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. at the Moosic Presbyterian Church.</p><style>
