Wilkes-Barre city council hears from groups planning free summer movie series

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; On his way to a future in the military, Namir Murphy intends to defend our country.But before he does, Murphy helped Meyers defend a title.Murphy won four times Tuesday, Nazir Dunell was a triple winner, and Meyers wrapped up its second straight unbeaten regular season and Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys track and field championship with a 94-56 blitzing of Holy Redeemer at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.&#8220;No surprise, it feels normal,&#8221; said Murphy, who also competes in football and wrestling for Meyers. &#8220;Just pretty much used to staying in first place this season. Just another day in the office. We wanted to come back to defend our title.&#8220;We made it happen.&#8221;Murphy had a big hand in that, piling up victories in the shot put, discus and javelin and as the leadoff man for the winning 400-meter relay team as Meyers won its 14th straight regular season duel meet.Not bad for a senior who is already a member of the National Guard and plans to become a full-time soldier following his high school graduation next month.&#8220;He went through basic training last summer,&#8221; Meyers coach Hayden White said. &#8220;He balances the military with football, track and wrestling. He&#8217;s a three-sport athlete. It&#8217;s a tribute to him that he works so hard. In a couple more months, he&#8217;ll be fighting for our country.&#8221;Maybe that&#8217;s why Murphy wasn&#8217;t all that elated over collecting a second straight league crown.&#8220;To be honest, I don&#8217;t really have a feeling towards anything,&#8221; Murphy said. &#8220;Being in the military, you&#8217;ve always got to stay neutral (emotionally). That&#8217;s the first thing they teach you. I just use these sports to keep me in shape for the military. It comes down to the throws, usually.&#8220;That&#8217;s where I come in.&#8221;Leah Mullery came in first in three events on the girls side, leading Holy Redeemer past Meyers 94-53.Mullery was part of the winning 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams and also captured the 800 run. The Royals also leaned on double winners Lindsey Williams (1,600 and 3,200 runs), Kaylee Soboleski (shot put and discus) and Nicole Kerestes (200 dash and high jump) in the win.Dunell played a big part in the win for the Meyers boys, who upset division favorite Hanover Area last week in a battle of unbeatens to finish 7-0 for the second straight season.A major player in this season&#8217;s success, Dunell finished first in the 110 hurdles, 100 dash and as the anchor leg of that winning 400 relay team.&#8220;It feels amazing,&#8221; Dunell said. &#8220;I had a clear mindset to come here to just do my part and come together and win this meet.&#8220;It feels even more special to know we won back-to-back.&#8221;That was the strategy, especially after the Mohawks beat Hanover Area last week in the final race of the meet, a nail-biting 1,600 relay victory that raised the stakes for the regular season&#8217;s final meet.&#8220;The motto for the week was &#8216;6-0 and one to go,&#8217;&#8221; White said. &#8220;Really, it was a very important meet. Our kids wanted to get their best performances to prepare for (Tuesday&#8217;s) districts. Some of the kids got their best times of the season, so far.&#8220;That was good to see.&#8221;BoysHanover Area 93, Lake-Lehman 57Brandon Brueckner won the triple jump, 100 dash and long jump as the Hawkeyes finished with a second straight 6-1 season and second-place finish in the WVC Division 2.Berwick 68,GAR 62Bao Le was a four-time winner as the Bulldogs finished their season with a victory. Le won both hurdles events, the 400 dash and led off the winning 3200 relay team.GirlsLake-Lehman 100,Hanover Area 50Jace Garnick and Hailey Kubiski were triple winners as the Black Knights finished the regular season at 6-1 and tied with Berwick for the WVC Division 2 title. Garnick won the 800 run, Kubiski captured the 400 dash and both ran on the winning 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams.Berwick 107, GAR 36Payden Montana set a new school record with a javelin throw of 121 feet as the 6-1 Bulldogs tied Lake-Lehman for the WVC Division 2 championship.Montana also won the shot put and discus, and holds the Berwick records in all three throwing events.
