Our view: Kehler remaining on council is not ‘cool’ at all

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Members of Dorranceton United Methodist Church have called the Wyoming Avenue church home since the 1960s.</p><p>But the church&#8217;s origins in the Wyoming Valley can be traced back much further than that, and on Sunday, its congregation gathered to celebrate its history of more than a century.</p><p>&#8220;We decided it was a good time to celebrate the heritage of this congregation since it has been 120 years since the cornerstone of the original church was laid,&#8221; said Rev. Deborah Rose, the church&#8217;s pastor. &#8220;That building was located at the corner of West Dorrance Street and Schuyler Avenue&#8221;</p><p>The event, which featured a worship service and gathering of parishioners afterward, coincided with Heritage Sunday, a day set aside for the celebration of the legacy of United Methodists.</p><p>&#8220;It was all to celebrate our heritage as a community of faith,&#8221; Rose said.</p><p>Rose said the congregation felt it is was appropriate to get together and honor the work the church has done since the early 1900s and all of the memories of past events.</p><p>About 80 members and other visitors attended the service. After the service, they enjoyed refreshments, coffee and treats, as well as fellowship.</p><p>They also looked over some church memorabilia honoring past members, community events and stories of survival. There were photos of members and their families at various fundraisers and community service activities throughout the years, pictures of children attending the Sunday school and photos of the church over its lifetime.</p><p>There were also Bibles and books dating back to when the church was first founded.</p><p>Some members were thankful to take some of the older books home to keep and cherish.</p><p>Members Pam Dereamer, Mary Fino, Deb Long and Brenda Shone took the time to gather the assortment of memorabilia from the church archives for display. Rose expressed sincere thanks for their efforts.</p><p>Sunday&#8217;s event was not a fundraiser. The church does hold numerous fundraisers during the year, Rose said.</p><p>&#8220;This is a faith community active in missions raising funds to support local, national and international missions,&#8221; she said.</p><style>
