Taste of the Mountain offers a little something for everyone

WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; The former United States under secretary of the Army was back at his alma mater Sunday.Patrick J. Murphy, a King&#8217;s College graduate, was the commencement speaker at the college&#8217;s 68th annual commencement at the Mohegan Sun Arena.&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t be here without King&#8217;s,&#8221; Murphy said as he addressed 451 graduates and their friends and loved ones. Murphy said he was rejected the first time he applied to King&#8217;s, but after receiving his two-year degree, he reapplied and was accepted.Murphy congratulated the students, &#8220;who were now part of the 30 percent&#8221; of individuals with a higher education degree.The 1996 graduate encouraged students to live a purposeful life, stay hungry and humble and be a leader of character.&#8220;Character is who you are when no one is watching,&#8221; Murphy said.After his graduation, Murphy was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve. After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, during which the majority of the graduates he was addressing would have been in first grade, Murphy served in the Middle East.Upon his return to the United States, Murphy said he decided to run for Congress in 2006. He said he did it for the 19 men in his unit who did not make it home.&#8220;I wanted to fight for them,&#8221; he said.He was elected to Congress in 2006, representing Bucks County and parts of Montgomery County. He lost his seat in 2010.After telling of his failed re-election effort, Murphy encouraged the students to &#8220;do the right thing.&#8221;&#8220;Follow your heart &#8230; it&#8217;ll always work out,&#8221; he said.He was appointed under secretary of the Army in Jan. 4, 2016, and, for a time, served as acting secretary of the Army.Jack Cleary, the president of the class of 2017, said he didn&#8217;t think college was going to end.&#8220;But we&#8217;ll forever be Monarchs,&#8221; he said.Cleary, of Kings Park, N.Y., came to Wilkes-Barre because of athletics, receiving an email from a coach at King&#8217;s. He wanted to do something in science because of watching the television show &#8220;Criminal Minds.&#8221;&#8220;That can&#8217;t be too hard &#8230; but that didn&#8217;t last very long,&#8221; he said, noting he found a new home in accounting.Murphy, who was an adjunct professor of law at Widener University in Pennsylvania and a professor of constitutional law at West Point, reminded the students that their degrees matter even if they come from a small school.&#8220;A King&#8217;s College degree is just as good as anywhere else,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and I&#8217;ve taught elsewhere.&#8221;Also making remarks during the ceremony was Bishop Joseph Bambera, bishop of the Diocese of Scranton.
